Teachings of Paul

In Acts, we’ve seen how Paul traveled to churches, taught the people, and continued to encourage the believers in different cities. Even when Paul couldn’t be with a church in person, he continued to teach them through letters he’d write them. 1 Thessalonians is a letter Paul wrote to the Thessalonica church and today, we’re going to look at one of the lessons he taught the people there through his letter.

Read 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18.

Paul instructed the people to do three things all the time: be glad in God (rejoice), talk to God (pray), and say thank you to God (give thanks). Paul told them to do these things always. Not just sometimes, but all the time! 

Discuss:

• What are ways you can be glad in God?
• When do you pray to God during your day?
• What are you thankful for today?

Read 1 Thessalonians 5:19

Next, Paul said “don’t quench the Spirit.” Have you ever been camping or seen a fire pit before? What happens when you pour water on the fire? It puts the fire out! God’s Spirit is like a fire inside us, helping us love God and do what’s right. Paul’s instructions warn not to do things that put that fire out. Keep it burning by staying close to God.

• What do you think keeps that fire burning bright?
• What’s one thing that might “quench” or dim that fire in your own life?

Read 1 Thessalonians 5:20-21

Then Paul talked about listening well. He said don’t ignore it when someone teaches you about God, but also don’t just believe everything you hear either. Check if it matches what the Bible says—kind of like how you’d check if a puzzle piece fits before you jam it in. Then follow whatever is true and good.

• Why do you think Paul says to “test” what you hear instead of believing everything right away?
• What’s one way you could check if something matches the Bible?
