Why were the believers selling what they owned?

Key Verse | Acts 2:45

And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.

Acts 2:42-47

The Believers Form a Community

42All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lords Supper*), and to prayer.

43A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. 44And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. 45They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. 46They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lords Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity*47all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.

Observe Acts 2:42-47

Take a moment to think about all the toys and things that are in your room that you own. Think about how many of them you enjoy playing with and are grateful for. Think about the last meal you ate. Think about how someone made it for you and that God provided them with the food needed to feed you.

Not everyone in our city and world have all these things. Sometimes, people have needs for reasons out of their control. The early church in Acts 2 saw that some of their people had needs. Dive into Acts 2:42-47 today to see how they responded to the needs people had.

  1. What things were being done by God through the apostles?
  2. What actions did the believers do in verse 45?
  3. What was the attitude of the believers as they cared for one another?
  4. Can you think of anyone in your life who has a need you can meet? What is that need? What can you do to serve that person?

Pray as a Family

  • Ask God to show you what you have to be thankful for.
  • Thank God for the things he has given you and praise him for being a loving Father.
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to show you how you can meet someone’s need this week.
