John 15:5

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

What happened at Pentacost?

Key Verse | Acts 2:4

And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Acts 2:1-8

Acts of the Apostles2

The Holy Spirit Comes

1On the day of Pentecost* all the believers were meeting together in one place. 2Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. 3Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. 4And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages,* as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.

5At that time there were devout Jews from every nation living in Jerusalem. 6When they heard the loud noise, everyone came running, and they were bewildered to hear their own languages being spoken by the believers.

7They were completely amazed. How can this be? they exclaimed. These people are all from Galilee, 8and yet we hear them speaking in our own native languages!

Footnotes

2:1 The Festival of Pentecost came 50days after Passover (when Jesus was crucified).
2:4 Or in other tongues.

Observe Acts 1:1-8

Have you ever seen something so amazing, you just had to tell everyone about it? In Acts 2:1-8, something amazing happens to the disciples! To better understand what we are reading, we are going to be detectives today as we read. Detectives ask 5 very important questions when trying to solve a mystery. So, find your spyglass, because we are going to look real closely at Acts 2:1-8 and ask the questions who, what, where, when, and why.

Search for the answers to these questions in Acts 2:1-8:

  1. Who was there?
  2. What happened?
  3. Where did this happen?
  4. Why were the people bewildered?

Challenge: To further answer these questions, we can look at the small details that describe the event, or the adjectives. As you read, underline or highlight all the words that describe what the disciples were feeling, hearing, or seeing. What would your reaction be if you experienced an event like the disciples did?

Pray

Lord, thank you that you are a God that keeps his promises. Help me to feel, see, and hear the Holy Spirit in my life so I can be brave enough to share the Good News of Jesus and know you more. Amen.
