Central Truth

God set His mind to discipline those who disobeyed Him.

Key Verse | Jeremiah 19:10–11

"Then you are to break the jar in the sight of the men who accompany you and say to them, 'Thus says the LORD of hosts, "Just so will I break this people and this city, even as one breaks a potter's vessel, which cannot again be repaired; and they will bury in Topheth because there is no other place for burial."'" (Jeremiah 19:10-11)

Jeremiah 19

The Broken Flask

Thus says the LORD, “Go, buy a potter's earthenware flask, and take some of the elders of the people and some of the elders of the priests, and go out to the Valley of the Son of Hinnom at the entry of the Potsherd Gate, and proclaim there the words that I tell you. You shall say, ‘Hear the word of the LORD, O kings of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem. Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I am bringing such disaster upon this place that the ears of everyone who hears of it will tingle. Because the people have forsaken me and have profaned this place by making offerings in it to other gods whom neither they nor their fathers nor the kings of Judah have known; and because they have filled this place with the blood of innocents, and have built the high places of Baal to burn their sons in the fire as burnt offerings to Baal, which I did not command or decree, nor did it come into my mind— therefore, behold, days are coming, declares the LORD, when this place shall no more be called Topheth, or the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter. And in this place I will make void the plans of Judah and Jerusalem, and will cause their people to fall by the sword before their enemies, and by the hand of those who seek their life. I will give their dead bodies for food to the birds of the air and to the beasts of the earth. And I will make this city a horror, a thing to be hissed at. Everyone who passes by it will be horrified and will hiss because of all its wounds. And I will make them eat the flesh of their sons and their daughters, and everyone shall eat the flesh of his neighbor in the siege and in the distress, with which their enemies and those who seek their life afflict them.’

10 Then you shall break the flask in the sight of the men who go with you, 11 and shall say to them, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts: So will I break this people and this city, as one breaks a potter's vessel, so that it can never be mended. Men shall bury in Topheth because there will be no place else to bury. 12 Thus will I do to this place, declares the LORD, and to its inhabitants, making this city like Topheth. 13 The houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah—all the houses on whose roofs offerings have been offered to all the host of heaven, and drink offerings have been poured out to other gods—shall be defiled like the place of Topheth.’”

14 Then Jeremiah came from Topheth, where the LORD had sent him to prophesy, and he stood in the court of the LORD's house and said to all the people: 15 “Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, behold, I am bringing upon this city and upon all its towns all the disaster that I have pronounced against it, because they have stiffened their neck, refusing to hear my words.”

Dive Deeper | Jeremiah 19

I learned a couple of things from this chapter in Jeremiah. First, make sure you always take reinforcements with you if you tell people that their city will be destroyed and that they will become cannibals (verse 2). I think most people did not receive that message very well, especially hearing it from someone like Jeremiah, who was not liked during his time even though he was a faithful man of God. The second obvious observation is if anyone ever breaks a potter's vessel in front of you, LISTEN (verse 10)!

I have been fortunate to have guys in my life who were not afraid to be a Jeremiah and speak biblical wisdom into my life in times of doubt and trouble. I have also had the fortune to be in several great community groups with guys who have spurred me on, held me accountable, prayed for me, and just lived life together. I will no longer live my life any other way except through community.

When I am not in community, my life is not pretty because of my selfishness and my tendency to fall back into struggles. Living out biblical community has been one of the hardest things I have done, but it is also one of the best, most rewarding experiences that I have had. These guys have been important in my life when I have gone through some tough situations. Their advice was not always what I wanted to hear, but it was the advice I NEEDED to hear (see Jeremiah 19)!

It is amazing how God gives you the opportunity to pour into other people after you have trusted Him to let others pour into you! It is so encouraging, and I receive more joy when I have an opportunity to share with someone else the biblical wisdom that God has taught me through other believers. It spurs me on to trust Him more!

Discussion Questions

1. Do you have a Jeremiah (Christian mentor) or a group of Jeremiahs (community group) in your life?

2. Are you truly honest with them about your struggles and the rest of your life, so they can pray for you and give you biblical advice?

3. Do you apply that advice to your life? Or do you ignore it, like the kings of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, because you think you know what is best for you?

4. How have you used this advice to mentor others or speak biblical truth to others (friends, family, and co-workers)?

WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY

JEREMIAH 15-19 (APR 25-29)

Read Jeremiah 15:15-21.

How is Jeremiah feeling in verses 15-18? Who is he telling about how he feels? Who do you go to when you are struggling with fear, worry, or anger?

What is the Lord's response to Jeremiah in verses 19-21? Who is going to fight for Jeremiah and protect him? What does Jeremiah need to do (see verse 19)?

Verse 16 tells us that God's Word is good enough to eat! What do you think this means? What does food do for you? How is this similar to what God's Word does for us? When you are struggling, do you go to God's Word for comfort, peace, and joy?

Activity: Buy a cake mix and frosting (that you can write with) at the store. Bake the cake as a family. While the cake is baking and cooling, memorize Jeremiah 15:16. When the cake is cool, write "WORD" across the cake. As you eat it this week, be reminded that "eating" God's Word is great nourishment!
