Central Truth

Life can sometimes be overwhelming and produce deep despair. Our hope is in the Lord, not in this world.

Key Verse | Jeremiah 20:12–13

Yet, O LORD of hosts, You who test the righteous,
Who see the mind and the heart;
Let me see Your vengeance on them;
For to You I have set forth my cause.
Sing to the LORD, praise the LORD!
For He has delivered the soul of the needy one
From the hand of evildoers.
(Jeremiah 20:12-13)

Jeremiah 20

Jeremiah Persecuted by Pashhur

Now Pashhur the priest, the son of Immer, who was chief officer in the house of the LORD, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things. Then Pashhur beat Jeremiah the prophet, and put him in the stocks that were in the upper Benjamin Gate of the house of the LORD. The next day, when Pashhur released Jeremiah from the stocks, Jeremiah said to him, “The LORD does not call your name Pashhur, but Terror on Every Side. For thus says the LORD: Behold, I will make you a terror to yourself and to all your friends. They shall fall by the sword of their enemies while you look on. And I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon. He shall carry them captive to Babylon, and shall strike them down with the sword. Moreover, I will give all the wealth of the city, all its gains, all its prized belongings, and all the treasures of the kings of Judah into the hand of their enemies, who shall plunder them and seize them and carry them to Babylon. And you, Pashhur, and all who dwell in your house, shall go into captivity. To Babylon you shall go, and there you shall die, and there you shall be buried, you and all your friends, to whom you have prophesied falsely.”

O LORD, you have deceived me,
    and I was deceived;
you are stronger than I,
    and you have prevailed.
I have become a laughingstock all the day;
    everyone mocks me.
For whenever I speak, I cry out,
    I shout, “Violence and destruction!”
For the word of the LORD has become for me
    a reproach and derision all day long.
If I say, “I will not mention him,
    or speak any more in his name,”
there is in my heart as it were a burning fire
    shut up in my bones,
and I am weary with holding it in,
    and I cannot.
10  For I hear many whispering.
    Terror is on every side!
“Denounce him! Let us denounce him!”
    say all my close friends,
    watching for my fall.
“Perhaps he will be deceived;
    then we can overcome him
    and take our revenge on him.”
11  But the LORD is with me as a dread warrior;
    therefore my persecutors will stumble;
    they will not overcome me.
They will be greatly shamed,
    for they will not succeed.
Their eternal dishonor
    will never be forgotten.
12  O LORD of hosts, who tests the righteous,
    who sees the heart and the mind, 1 20:12 Hebrew kidneys
let me see your vengeance upon them,
    for to you have I committed my cause.

13  Sing to the LORD;
    praise the LORD!
For he has delivered the life of the needy
    from the hand of evildoers.

14  Cursed be the day
    on which I was born!
The day when my mother bore me,
    let it not be blessed!
15  Cursed be the man who brought the news to my father,
“A son is born to you,”
    making him very glad.
16  Let that man be like the cities
    that the LORD overthrew without pity;
let him hear a cry in the morning
    and an alarm at noon,
17  because he did not kill me in the womb;
    so my mother would have been my grave,
    and her womb forever great.
18  Why did I come out from the womb
    to see toil and sorrow,
    and spend my days in shame?

Dive Deeper | Jeremiah 20

Wow! What an incredible example of faithfulness in the midst of adversity as Jeremiah cried out to God, "LIFE IS NOT FAIR!"

It is easy for me to slip into a mindset that allows my circumstances to expose where my hope is rooted. I sometimes find myself discouraged by life on earth in a way that reveals a misplaced perspective. One of my favorite (and most convicting) passages is the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7).

Matthew 5:11-12 says, "Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you."

Jeremiah experienced in a raw way that life is about having an eternal perspective. I often find myself seeking security on earth. Jesus reminds me of the foolishness of that in Matthew 6:19-21, "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

The cultural current I live in can delude me into going with the flow and buying into a worldview that life is about my earthly happiness and security. God loves me and desires that I experience the abundant life He offers. That abundant life comes from following Christ and God's wisdom, not the culture around me and my wisdom. I must choose to live by faith in the truth of God's Word instead of being tossed and driven by my hourly/daily feelings.

By feasting daily on God's Word, I am reminded of where my hope is placed, and I am convicted by the ways I can daily get swept up in the current of the cultural flow. Read Psalm 139 and be reminded today that God knows all about your current situation and circumstances.

Discussion Questions

1. What perspective do your priorities reflect? Read Matthew 6:33-34.

2. Whom are you living to please today? Read Galatians 1:10.

3. What can you relate to in Jeremiah's prayer (verses 7-18)?

WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY

JEREMIAH 20-24 (MAY 2-6)

Read Jeremiah 22:13-16.

How did the king in verse 13 deal with his workers?

How was his father different (verse 15)?

Do you think the first builder was focused on himself or others? What about his father?

Who are you typically focused on? What does that typically look like?

Activity: Have every person make a list of seven things, one for each day, that they can do to be focused on others this week.
