Central Truth

God is sovereign.

Key Verse | Jeremiah 18:4

But the vessel that he was making of clay was spoiled in the hand of the potter; so he remade it into another vessel, as it pleased the potter to make. (Jeremiah 18:4)

Jeremiah 18

The Potter and the Clay

The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD: “Arise, and go down to the potter's house, and there I will let you hear 1 18:2 Or will cause you to hear my words.” So I went down to the potter's house, and there he was working at his wheel. And the vessel he was making of clay was spoiled in the potter's hand, and he reworked it into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to do.

Then the word of the LORD came to me: “O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter has done? declares the LORD. Behold, like the clay in the potter's hand, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel. If at any time I declare concerning a nation or a kingdom, that I will pluck up and break down and destroy it, and if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turns from its evil, I will relent of the disaster that I intended to do to it. And if at any time I declare concerning a nation or a kingdom that I will build and plant it, 10 and if it does evil in my sight, not listening to my voice, then I will relent of the good that I had intended to do to it. 11 Now, therefore, say to the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: ‘Thus says the LORD, Behold, I am shaping disaster against you and devising a plan against you. Return, every one from his evil way, and amend your ways and your deeds.’

12 But they say, ‘That is in vain! We will follow our own plans, and will every one act according to the stubbornness of his evil heart.’

13  Therefore thus says the LORD:
Ask among the nations,
    Who has heard the like of this?
The virgin Israel
    has done a very horrible thing.
14  Does the snow of Lebanon leave
    the crags of Sirion? 2 18:14 Hebrew of the field
Do the mountain waters run dry, 3 18:14 Hebrew Are foreign waters plucked up
    the cold flowing streams?
15  But my people have forgotten me;
    they make offerings to false gods;
they made them stumble in their ways,
    in the ancient roads,
and to walk into side roads,
    not the highway,
16  making their land a horror,
    a thing to be hissed at forever.
Everyone who passes by it is horrified
    and shakes his head.
17  Like the east wind I will scatter them
    before the enemy.
I will show them my back, not my face,
    in the day of their calamity.”

18 Then they said, “Come, let us make plots against Jeremiah, for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, let us strike him with the tongue, and let us not pay attention to any of his words.”

19  Hear me, O LORD,
    and listen to the voice of my adversaries.
20  Should good be repaid with evil?
    Yet they have dug a pit for my life.
Remember how I stood before you
    to speak good for them,
    to turn away your wrath from them.
21  Therefore deliver up their children to famine;
    give them over to the power of the sword;
let their wives become childless and widowed.
    May their men meet death by pestilence,
    their youths be struck down by the sword in battle.
22  May a cry be heard from their houses,
    when you bring the plunderer suddenly upon them!
For they have dug a pit to take me
    and laid snares for my feet.
23  Yet you, O LORD, know
    all their plotting to kill me.
Forgive not their iniquity,
    nor blot out their sin from your sight.
Let them be overthrown before you;
    deal with them in the time of your anger.

Dive Deeper | Jeremiah 18

In search of a fun activity for my community group, I stumbled upon a place that would teach you in one class to paint Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh. That's right, regardless of your artistic ability, you would walk out with a 15x20 canvas covered with your "masterpiece." We carefully followed the instructor and tried our best to mimic her strokes, but our knowledge and experience in painting were slight, and even we knew that our creations paled next to the original. If you stood 200 feet away from Van Gogh's work of art, squinted your eyes, and waited for everything to blur, it looked exactly like our paintings. However, we did have a great time; and now we have wonderful keepsakes that will cover the walls of our closets for all time.

While in our class, we learned that when an actual painter, such as Van Gogh, was displeased with the way his handiwork was turning out, he would paint over it and begin again with an empty canvas. Needless to say, some canvases had many coats before the conception that the artist strove for finally appeared.

In many ways, this mirrors the method of the potter in today's verse, as well as God's sovereignty over us, His creation. Only the Originator knows the true potential and purpose of His creation, and it is His decision to remold a spoiled or imperfect creation into a true work of art.

That is all well and good, but sometimes we might feel wounded by the number of times our Designer must begin again with us. The trick is to have patience while the sculpting is taking place and trust in the Artist that the finished product will be worth the wait. After all, it is His name that is written upon us for all to see.

"Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing." (James 1:2-4)

Discussion Questions

1. Have you ever worked on a project that wasn't going as you had planned?

2. Did you quit working on it and let the imperfection go, or did you restart to have a perfect ending?

3. What three imperfections can you think of that God may be correcting you on right now?

4. What kind of support can your family, friends, or community group give you in facing these trials?

WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY

JEREMIAH 15-19 (APR 25-29)

Read Jeremiah 15:15-21.

How is Jeremiah feeling in verses 15-18? Who is he telling about how he feels? Who do you go to when you are struggling with fear, worry, or anger?

What is the Lord's response to Jeremiah in verses 19-21? Who is going to fight for Jeremiah and protect him? What does Jeremiah need to do (see verse 19)?

Verse 16 tells us that God's Word is good enough to eat! What do you think this means? What does food do for you? How is this similar to what God's Word does for us? When you are struggling, do you go to God's Word for comfort, peace, and joy?

Activity: Buy a cake mix and frosting (that you can write with) at the store. Bake the cake as a family. While the cake is baking and cooling, memorize Jeremiah 15:16. When the cake is cool, write "WORD" across the cake. As you eat it this week, be reminded that "eating" God's Word is great nourishment!
