Central Truth

We are chosen by God to bear lasting fruit to the world around us, which only comes from abiding in Christ.

Key Verse | John 15:16

You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you.
(John 15:16)

John 15

I Am the True Vine

I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

12 This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, 1 15:15 Or bondservants, or slaves (for the contextual rendering of the Greek word doulos, see Preface); likewise for servant later in this verse and in verse 20 for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 17 These things I command you, so that you will love one another.

The Hatred of the World

18 If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. 21 But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have been guilty of sin, 2 15:22 Greek they would not have sin; also verse 24 but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 Whoever hates me hates my Father also. 24 If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. 25 But the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: ‘They hated me without a cause.’

26 But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me. 27 And you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning.

Dive Deeper | John 15

Our small ministry was approached by our contact from the Buddhist orphanage about helping with their growing number of orphans. This need was way over our heads! But we believed God miraculously opened up this opportunity, so we turned everything over to Him and trusted Him with the outcome. After a year of seeking the Lord, we took a huge leap of faith and opened a boys' orphan home just in time to celebrate their first Christmas. To see the joy in their faces was priceless. He alone gets the glory!

My journey here in Thailand has not all been glorious; I have also had many lows. Though God is with me daily, it's during the tough seasons I have felt the closest to Him. As I seek Him, He reminds me that He is the One who has chosen and appointed me to serve and to bear fruit. And when I call to Him, He hears my prayers and answers them in ways beyond what I can imagine. To feel so close to Him makes all the difficult times worth it.

Never in my wildest dreams would I have expected God to choose me to be a part of starting an orphanage and impacting the course of these boys' lives. But His Word is clear that as we abide in Him, He abides in us. That's the key to everything! We can do nothing apart from Him.

As we regularly spend time with God -- talking with Him and reading and meditating on His Word -- He transforms us on the inside. The inward transformation that takes place will naturally reflect outwardly to the world around us. We cannot change ourselves or make our fruit lasting on our own strength. Bearing lasting fruit is just the natural overflow of what He has done inside our hearts. We can't hold it inside, but we must share it with others!

Discussion Questions

1. Do you regularly spend time seeking God?

2. What transformation has taken place in your heart? Is it evident to others?

3. What has God chosen you to do in this current season? Are you being obedient?

4. What are you asking God for but not believing that He hears you or will answer you?

WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY

John 13-17 (April 23-27)

Read John 15:1-17.

• What did Jesus say He is?
• What did He say we are?
• What does it mean to prune something?
• Why do you think it helps to prune back a vine? (Check out Wikipedia's answer to this question.)
• What kind of pruning happens in our lives? And what it is the pruning for?
• Take time for each person to talk about a time when they experienced pruning (e.g., experienced the removal of something from your life that caused you to grow in your walk with Christ).
• Talk about how God used this in your life to draw you closer to Him and to bring Him glory (e.g., someone saw your response and wondered why you could respond well, or He took you to another team to share about Him).

Activity: Go outside and cut a branch off a tree or bush (it would be great if it was a flowering tree or bush that had the flower and leaves on it.) Put it in your house where everyone can see what happens to it. Do not put it in water.

Then, watch the branch over the next week and see what happens to it. Why is it dying? Where did it get what it needed to live from? Remember what Jesus said about Himself and us in John 15? What happens when we don't stay connected to Jesus? What are ways that you stay connected to Him?
