Central Truth

God knows the real you, and He wants to free you of your guilt and shame so that you can experience joy.

Key Verse | John 4:28–30

So the woman left her waterpot, and went into the city and said to the men, "Come, see a man who told me all the things that I have done; this is not the Christ, is it?" They went out of the city and were coming to Him. (John 4:28-30)

John 4:16-30

16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” 17 The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.” 19 The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.” 21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.” 26 Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am he.”

27 Just then his disciples came back. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you seek?” or, “Why are you talking with her?” 28 So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” 30 They went out of the town and were coming to him.

Dive Deeper | John 4:16-30

The shame she carried was heavier than the waterpot she filled. Because of her shady past and present, she did not dare come to the well with the other more respectable women. Yet, the Samaritan woman's experience at the well on that afternoon was different. This time a Man spoke to her, offering to give her something, rather than take something from her.

"But there's a catch," she thought suspiciously. He told her to get her husband, but she did not have one. This Jewish Man already knew that she had been married five times. He also knew that although she was currently unmarried, she was living with yet another man.

She tried to divert the conversation, but He cut to the chase. He spoke truth about her and truth about Himself. For perhaps the first time, rather than carrying the heavy waterpot OR her shame, she joyfully ran back to her village, inviting everyone to come meet the Man who had told her everything she had ever done.

Most of us hide the darker parts of our past, or even present, just like this woman did when first speaking with Jesus at the well. But she learned something that day as she engaged with God Himself. She learned that secrets make you sick, but truth brings joy and freedom.

We fear exposure and often refuse to bring into light our sins, large or small. I have been this woman. I have not had five husbands, but sin has eclipsed my life. I believed that if anyone knew the truth, I would not only be whispered about, but also shunned. Rejected. Abandoned. The very thing I tried to cover held me captive. Only when it was "out there" was I free.

Like the woman at the well, my encounter with the Savior shed life-giving light. He already knew my junk. He already knows yours. Hiding nothing. Just like the woman she became, I delight in telling others how Christ has freed me.

Leave your waterpot and your shame today. Live in His light. In fact, run to it.

Discussion Questions

1. What sin are you covering?

2. Will you admit your secrets to yourself and to God, who already knows and accepts you for who you are, so you can be freed from your hiding?

3. With whom can you share this new freedom today?

FAMILY DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. How does Jesus show the woman at the well that He knows her?

2. What does she do after Jesus says He is the Messiah (verse 28)?

3. What does she tell the people (verse 29)?

4. How well does Jesus know you (see Psalm 139:1-18)? Does the fact that Jesus knows and loves you make you want to tell others about who He is?
