Central Truth

Jesus is the Christ of God, who was crucified for our sins and rose again. Now it's time to respond to that truth with all aspects of our lives.

Key Verse | Luke 9:24

"For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake, he is the one who will save it." (Luke 9:24)

Luke 9:18-27

Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ

18 Now it happened that as he was praying alone, the disciples were with him. And he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” 19 And they answered, “John the Baptist. But others say, Elijah, and others, that one of the prophets of old has risen.” 20 Then he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter answered, “The Christ of God.”

Jesus Foretells His Death

21 And he strictly charged and commanded them to tell this to no one, 22 saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.”

Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus

23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. 25 For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself? 26 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. 27 But I tell you truly, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.”

Dive Deeper | Luke 9:18-27

Jesus asked His disciples, "Who do you say that I am?" Peter answered, "The Christ of God." (Luke 9:20)

I knew the answer to that question at a very young age, but my actions revealed that I didn't believe it was true. Just over five years ago, I was questioning what I really believed. I went to the Young Adult Launch Retreat, and while I was there, I read this passage, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it." (Luke 9:23-24, NIV) I couldn't shake it from my mind because I was trying to save my life. I was living for the world, and Scripture made it very clear that those choices result in death. And while I didn't fully understand what it meant to "take up my cross daily," I can tell you I wasn't denying myself anything, and so it was clear for the first time that I was not following Jesus.

As this reality set in, I remember wondering what I would have to give up from my current lifestyle to truly follow Christ. The answer was God wanted everything—my entire life. The ironic thing about it was that the decision I feared would steal my fun has resulted in absolute freedom—freedom to love the Lord with the time I have on this earth, knowing that I'm going to spend eternity with our Father in Heaven.

While I made the decision that day to "lose" my life for Christ, every once in a while that familiar feeling comes back when I realize that I'm not surrendering a certain aspect of my life. It's one thing to commit your life to Christ verbally, but it's another to serve Him with everything all of the time. I have to ask myself continually, "What area of my life am I holding onto rather than 'losing' for the Lord?"

Discussion Questions

1. What areas of your life are you trying to save rather than lose for the Lord?

2. Why do we hold onto things so tightly rather than rely on the Lord?

3. What are some examples of areas in your life that you once controlled in an unhealthy way, but that you have since entrusted to the Lord?

4. What was the result of that decision?

FAMILY DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. Read verse 24. Jesus says it is better to lose your life for Him than to save it for yourself. What do you think that means? We cannot live for Jesus and live for ourselves.

2. When is it hard for you to choose God’s way over your way?

3. How can you choose this week to put God and others first?
