Central Truth

Are you seeking comfort and contentment apart from the Lord? Are you more concerned about your own wants than you are about pleasing God? Time is short, and we should be faithful daily where He has us.

Key Verse | 1 Corinthians 7:23

You were bought with a price; do not become bondservants of men. (1 Corinthians 7:23)

1 Corinthians 7:17-40

Live as You Are Called

17 Only let each person lead the life 1 7:17 Or each person walk in the way that the Lord has assigned to him, and to which God has called him. This is my rule in all the churches. 18 Was anyone at the time of his call already circumcised? Let him not seek to remove the marks of circumcision. Was anyone at the time of his call uncircumcised? Let him not seek circumcision. 19 For neither circumcision counts for anything nor uncircumcision, but keeping the commandments of God. 20 Each one should remain in the condition in which he was called. 21 Were you a bondservant 2 7:21 For the contextual rendering of the Greek word doulos, see Preface; also verses 22 (twice), 23 when called? Do not be concerned about it. (But if you can gain your freedom, avail yourself of the opportunity.) 22 For he who was called in the Lord as a bondservant is a freedman of the Lord. Likewise he who was free when called is a bondservant of Christ. 23 You were bought with a price; do not become bondservants of men. 24 So, brothers, 3 7:24 Or brothers and sisters; also verse 29 in whatever condition each was called, there let him remain with God.

The Unmarried and the Widowed

25 Now concerning 4 7:25 The expression Now concerning introduces a reply to a question in the Corinthians' letter; see 7:1 the betrothed, 5 7:25 Greek virgins I have no command from the Lord, but I give my judgment as one who by the Lord's mercy is trustworthy. 26 I think that in view of the present 6 7:26 Or impending distress it is good for a person to remain as he is. 27 Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek to be free. Are you free from a wife? Do not seek a wife. 28 But if you do marry, you have not sinned, and if a betrothed woman 7 7:28 Greek virgin; also verse 34 marries, she has not sinned. Yet those who marry will have worldly troubles, and I would spare you that. 29 This is what I mean, brothers: the appointed time has grown very short. From now on, let those who have wives live as though they had none, 30 and those who mourn as though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no goods, 31 and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world is passing away.

32 I want you to be free from anxieties. The unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to please the Lord. 33 But the married man is anxious about worldly things, how to please his wife, 34 and his interests are divided. And the unmarried or betrothed woman is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to be holy in body and spirit. But the married woman is anxious about worldly things, how to please her husband. 35 I say this for your own benefit, not to lay any restraint upon you, but to promote good order and to secure your undivided devotion to the Lord.

36 If anyone thinks that he is not behaving properly toward his betrothed, 8 7:36 Greek virgin; also verses 37, 38 if his 9 7:36 Or her passions are strong, and it has to be, let him do as he wishes: let them marry—it is no sin. 37 But whoever is firmly established in his heart, being under no necessity but having his desire under control, and has determined this in his heart, to keep her as his betrothed, he will do well. 38 So then he who marries his betrothed does well, and he who refrains from marriage will do even better.

39 A wife is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to be married to whom she wishes, only in the Lord. 40 Yet in my judgment she is happier if she remains as she is. And I think that I too have the Spirit of God.

Dive Deeper | 1 Corinthians 7:17-40

Folks, it appears we're stuck in an immoral world where the grass is seemingly greener on the other side. I've heard it said the grass is only greener because we haven't been over there to mess it up yet. Why is this so? Well, because we are desperately lacking in contentment. We're seeking that thing or that person who will fill some longing we have. Let me be the first to admit that I'm constantly guilty of this.

I used to refer to this passage as the singleness chapter (digital group hug). But in studying it, I found it to have many more layers than just Paul suggesting we remain unattached. While Paul does say we are not in sin by getting married -- after all, Proverbs 18:22 says, "He who finds a wife finds a good thing . . ." -- this chapter is about more than singleness and marriage, and, even work. It's about asking yourself what are your true concerns in life. Are your wants distracting you, or are you concerned about pleasing the Lord? Time is short. It's tempting to seek financial security, or a spouse, or the perfect job, or (you fill in the blank here) to provide comfort on this earth. But these are not what God told us to seek first, friends. We are to seek Him and not be worried about tomorrow (Matthew 6:33-34).

For me, 1 Corinthians 7:23 sums up this passage. We were purchased. We belong to God. We are a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9), chosen by Him to walk in good works He prepared for us beforehand (Ephesians 2:10). The things of this world no longer own us because Christ freed us from sin -- from ourselves -- when He died for us and then defeated death LIKE A BOSS. So don't become slaves of men (see also Galatians 1:10) or this world. Be free! Give generously, live courageously, love sacrificially. We are in the world, but no longer of it (John 17:16). May we all -- single or not -- be faithful where God has us today.

Discussion Questions

1. Are you serving God faithfully where He currently has you?

2. What are you a slave to? What is hindering you from being fully devoted to Christ wherever you are in your current season of life?

3. Are you looking to Christ as the source of your contentment? Or, are you looking to others, thinking a person or relationship will help solve the problem?
