Central Truth

Take courage as you obey and serve your Savior, because He is with you!

Key Verse | Haggai 2:4

"'But now take courage, Zerubbabel,' declares the LORD, 'take courage also, Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and all you people of the land take courage,' declares the LORD, 'and work; for I am with you,' declares the Lord of hosts." (Haggai 2:4)

Haggai 2

The Coming Glory of the Temple

In the seventh month, on the twenty-first day of the month, the word of the LORD came by the hand of Haggai the prophet: “Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to all the remnant of the people, and say, ‘Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How do you see it now? Is it not as nothing in your eyes? Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, declares the LORD. Be strong, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land, declares the LORD. Work, for I am with you, declares the LORD of hosts, according to the covenant that I made with you when you came out of Egypt. My Spirit remains in your midst. Fear not. For thus says the LORD of hosts: Yet once more, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land. And I will shake all nations, so that the treasures of all nations shall come in, and I will fill this house with glory, says the LORD of hosts. The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, declares the LORD of hosts. The latter glory of this house shall be greater than the former, says the LORD of hosts. And in this place I will give peace, declares the LORD of hosts.’”

Blessings for a Defiled People

10 On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet, 11 “Thus says the LORD of hosts: Ask the priests about the law: 12 ‘If someone carries holy meat in the fold of his garment and touches with his fold bread or stew or wine or oil or any kind of food, does it become holy?’” The priests answered and said, “No.” 13 Then Haggai said, “If someone who is unclean by contact with a dead body touches any of these, does it become unclean?” The priests answered and said, “It does become unclean.” 14 Then Haggai answered and said, “So is it with this people, and with this nation before me, declares the LORD, and so with every work of their hands. And what they offer there is unclean. 15 Now then, consider from this day onward. 1 2:15 Or backward; also verse 18 Before stone was placed upon stone in the temple of the LORD, 16 how did you fare? When one came to the wine vat to draw fifty measures, there were but twenty. 17 I struck you and all the products of your toil with blight and with mildew and with hail, yet you did not turn to me, declares the LORD. 18 Consider from this day onward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month. Since the day that the foundation of the LORD's temple was laid, consider: 19 Is the seed yet in the barn? Indeed, the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have yielded nothing. But from this day on I will bless you.”

Zerubbabel Chosen as a Signet

20 The word of the LORD came a second time to Haggai on the twenty-fourth day of the month, 21 “Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, I am about to shake the heavens and the earth, 22 and to overthrow the throne of kingdoms. I am about to destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the nations, and overthrow the chariots and their riders. And the horses and their riders shall go down, every one by the sword of his brother. 23 On that day, declares the LORD of hosts, I will take you, O Zerubbabel my servant, the son of Shealtiel, declares the LORD, and make you like a 3 2:23 Hebrew the signet ring, for I have chosen you, declares the LORD of hosts.”

Dive Deeper | Haggai 2

The people were discouraged and discontent, because as they were trying to build the temple, they could not see it ever being as great as the previous temple had been. Many probably felt it was a lame attempt at building something great that really couldn't be accomplished.

Growing up, I sometimes wondered if following Christ mattered or made a difference. You can grow weary and look at others who seem to be making a huge difference in spectacular ways. Following Christ doesn't always look like a fruitful investment of my heart and time. In the past, I have spoken truth to buddies that I have pledged to be with in community, and I have questioned, why am I going through all this trouble and discomfort? In moments of discouragement, I wondered if our obedience to point each other toward God's truth makes a difference? Have you faithfully done the right thing over and over again by loving those far from God, and it didn't seem to matter?

There are hills we climb that seem so mammoth that they won't be conquered. As a parent, there are times that I think, "God, my sons deserve better than me." The bottom line is -- dad, mom, brother, sister, servant, and hill climber, He says, "Take courage." And He gives a reason -- because "I'm with you." A ton of folks may tell us it matters, and we should not give up, but when the Lord says, "Take courage," I listen.

In my darkest moments, I have taken encouragement and felt His hand was on my shoulder. It did not appear that way because things seemed easier or because all the circumstances reversed themselves. The hill had not magically reduced itself to a bump in the road. He said, "I'm with you." When He says, "I'm with you," then I know I can fight the good fight in His shadow.

In this passage, I know I need to drown the other voices out and end the discussion because He said, "Take courage . . . I'm with you." So, let's get after it today!

Discussion Questions

1. Ask God to reveal where you have slowly become discouraged and have questions that need His encouragement.

2. Remind yourself of God's care in days past, and thank Him.

3. Admit where you need Him to be with you and ask God to help you remember; and thank Him for His presence in your obedience.

4. Call at least one person today who has served faithfully and remind that person that his/her investment and obedience matters.

5. Take courage and serve Him this day!

WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY

HAGGAI 1-ZECHARIAH 3 (NOVEMBER 21-25)

Read Haggai 1:1-11.

What were the people saying in verse 2? The Lord's house was in ruins, but what were the people living in (verses 3-4)? What were the people looking to for satisfaction, fulfillment, and contentment?

Reread verse 9. The people were looking after themselves and not focusing on honoring God with their lives and putting Him first. What are ways in which you put other things before God?

Read Matthew 6:19-34.

Look at verse 33. What should we seek first? How should we live? What will God do for us?

Activity: Let's practice making God a priority by giving up something that is a "luxury" for one week. So whether it's coffee from Starbucks, eating out, or your afterschool treat, pick something that will remind you always to put God's kingdom first. With the money that you would have spent on the "luxury," give it back to God's kingdom.
