Central Truth

God's love is not limited by our actions.

Key Verse | Hosea 11:8

How can I give you up, O Ephraim?
How can I surrender you, O Israel?
How can I make you like Admah?
How can I treat you like Zeboiim?
My heart is turned over within Me,
All My compassions are kindled.
(Hosea 11:8)

Hosea 11

The LORD's Love for Israel

When Israel was a child, I loved him,
    and out of Egypt I called my son.
The more they were called,
    the more they went away;
they kept sacrificing to the Baals
    and burning offerings to idols.

Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk;
    I took them up by their arms,
    but they did not know that I healed them.
I led them with cords of kindness, 1 11:4 Or humaneness; Hebrew man
    with the bands of love,
and I became to them as one who eases the yoke on their jaws,
    and I bent down to them and fed them.

They shall not 2 11:5 Or surely return to the land of Egypt,
    but Assyria shall be their king,
    because they have refused to return to me.
The sword shall rage against their cities,
    consume the bars of their gates,
    and devour them because of their own counsels.
My people are bent on turning away from me,
    and though they call out to the Most High,
    he shall not raise them up at all.

How can I give you up, O Ephraim?
    How can I hand you over, O Israel?
How can I make you like Admah?
    How can I treat you like Zeboiim?
My heart recoils within me;
    my compassion grows warm and tender.
I will not execute my burning anger;
    I will not again destroy Ephraim;
for I am God and not a man,
    the Holy One in your midst,
    and I will not come in wrath. 3 11:9 Or into the city

10  They shall go after the LORD;
    he will roar like a lion;
when he roars,
    his children shall come trembling from the west;
11  they shall come trembling like birds from Egypt,
    and like doves from the land of Assyria,
    and I will return them to their homes, declares the LORD.
12  4 11:12 Ch 12:1 in Hebrew Ephraim has surrounded me with lies,
    and the house of Israel with deceit,
but Judah still walks with God
    and is faithful to the Holy One.

Dive Deeper | Hosea 11

I grew up in a strict, but very loving, Christian home. So you can imagine what it was like when I was caught, at 15 years of age, sneaking out of my home one night. I was grounded for at least a month. But what I remember most, and perhaps the worst part for me, was that my dad was so disappointed he did not speak to me for several weeks. Of course, eventually our relationship was restored. And even though it did not feel like he loved me at that time, my dad never stopped loving me.

Hosea 11 is a beautiful picture of a similar story, only on a much grander scale. Throughout the Old Testament, we read about God's love and pursuit of the Israelites. He protected them, provided for them, and healed them time and time again, but Israel continued in disobedience and ingratitude toward God. Therefore God allowed Israel to suffer the consequences of its actions (Hosea 11:5-7).

However, the story does not end there. The Lord pours out His irrepressible love for the Israelites in today's key verse. In order to provide a little background, Ephraim is another term for Israel. Admah and Zeboiim were cities that God completely destroyed at the time of Sodom and Gomorrah because of their wickedness (Deuteronomy 29:23). God was angry with Israel, but today's passage reveals a God filled with compassion. His love far outweighs Israel's ingratitude and prevents Him from obliterating them. The Lord loved Israel from the very beginning, and He never stopped loving the Israelites.

The same holds true for you and me today, as well! About 700 years later, God would pour out His love for the entire world (not just the Israelites) by sending His one and only Son to live, die, and be brought to life again for our sake (John 3:16). Just as my parents loved me through my rebellion, the Lord loves us through ours. No matter what we have done or where we have been, God desires to protect us, provide for us, and heal us.

Discussion Questions

1. What words would you use to describe God?

2. Has there ever been a time in your life when you felt like God did not love you? Why?

3. Can you think of another story in Scripture that demonstrates God's unconditional love for people?

WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY

HOSEA 8-12 (SEPTEMBER 26-30)

Read Hosea 10:11-13.

God's Way or My Way?

Ask your children which they think is better: God's way or their way?

Reread Hosea 10:12-13.

Fold a piece of paper in half. On the top of the left half, write, "God's way." On the other half, write: "Our way." On the left side, write the four things that verse 12 says are following after God. On the right side record from verse 13 what happens when we do it our way.

Look at the differences, and talk about which one is better and why.

ACTIVITY: Hand your children a potato and tell them to make it grow. Give them a little time to try to figure out how to grow it. Then go to http://www.ehow.com/how_6239373_grow-potato-water-science-project.html to find out how to root the potato to grow it in the "right way," the way that will actually work.

God is our "expert" on life. We must seek Him and trust Him to do it "His way," which is the right way.
