Central Truth

God is good. God warns us, but we do not return to Him. God disciplines us because of His great love.

Key Verse | Hosea 10:13–15

You have plowed wickedness, you have reaped injustice, . . . .
Because you have trusted in your way, in your numerous warriors,
Therefore a tumult will arise among your people,
And all your fortresses will be destroyed,
As Shalman destroyed Beth-arbel on the day of battle,
When mothers were dashed in pieces with their children.
Thus it will be done to you at Bethel because of your great wickedness.
(Hosea 10:13-15a)

Hosea 10

Israel is a luxuriant vine
    that yields its fruit.
The more his fruit increased,
    the more altars he built;
as his country improved,
    he improved his pillars.
Their heart is false;
    now they must bear their guilt.
The LORD 1 10:2 Hebrew He will break down their altars
    and destroy their pillars.

For now they will say:
    “We have no king,
for we do not fear the LORD;
    and a king—what could he do for us?”
They utter mere words;
    with empty 2 10:4 Or vain (see Exodus 20:7) oaths they make covenants;
so judgment springs up like poisonous weeds
    in the furrows of the field.
The inhabitants of Samaria tremble
    for the calf 3 10:5 Or calves of Beth-aven.
Its people mourn for it, and so do its idolatrous priests—
    those who rejoiced over it and over its glory—
    for it has departed 4 10:5 Or has gone into exile from them.
The thing itself shall be carried to Assyria
    as tribute to the great king. 5 10:6 Or to King Jareb
Ephraim shall be put to shame,
    and Israel shall be ashamed of his idol. 6 10:6 Or counsel

Samaria's king shall perish
    like a twig on the face of the waters.
The high places of Aven, the sin of Israel,
    shall be destroyed.
Thorn and thistle shall grow up
    on their altars,
and they shall say to the mountains, “Cover us,”
    and to the hills, “Fall on us.”

From the days of Gibeah, you have sinned, O Israel;
    there they have continued.
    Shall not the war against the unjust 7 10:9 Hebrew the children of injustice overtake them in Gibeah?
10  When I please, I will discipline them,
    and nations shall be gathered against them
    when they are bound up for their double iniquity.

11  Ephraim was a trained calf
    that loved to thresh,
    and I spared her fair neck;
but I will put Ephraim to the yoke;
    Judah must plow;
    Jacob must harrow for himself.
12  Sow for yourselves righteousness;
    reap steadfast love;
    break up your fallow ground,
for it is the time to seek the LORD,
    that he may come and rain righteousness upon you.

13  You have plowed iniquity;
    you have reaped injustice;
    you have eaten the fruit of lies.
Because you have trusted in your own way
    and in the multitude of your warriors,
14  therefore the tumult of war shall arise among your people,
    and all your fortresses shall be destroyed,
as Shalman destroyed Beth-arbel on the day of battle;
    mothers were dashed in pieces with their children.
15  Thus it shall be done to you, O Bethel,
    because of your great evil.
At dawn the king of Israel
    shall be utterly cut off.

Dive Deeper | Hosea 10

My first thoughts: "Wow. How depressing!"

". . . When mothers were dashed in pieces with their children. Thus it will be done to you at Bethel because of your great wickedness." (Hosea 10:14) You know what, it IS depressing when we wallow in sin and God has to give us a spanking to remind us that the street is a dangerous place to play. The truth of the matter is this, God's punishment and discipline do NOT seem pleasant at the time but painful, says Hebrews 12:11. And Hebrews 12:10 explains that God "disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness."

In my own life, God has used His discipline to reveal to me His GOODNESS, if you can believe that. Over the course of several years, God used circumstances in my life to bring to the surface the hidden sin in my heart I call "self absorption." Let me tell you what it sounds like in my head and heart: "Everything is ALL about me -- my relationships, life, how that person interacted with me, how that person made me feel, and the outcome of any and every situation." For years I wrestled with the Lord and in relationships to get MY way and what I wanted, which looked like a lot of conflict and chronic hurt feelings. But through that He faithfully began to reveal my "it's-all-about-me" filter through which I saw the world.

It was THROUGH discipline and allowing things NOT to go my way that this truth finally began to sink in, "This life is not about me!" It has been a painful process, but I can't tell you how much God is changing me. Increasingly, I feel freed up to love people, not need people. And the best part -- because of seeing how God's discipline has brought freedom from the bondage to self, more than ever before I believe that He IS GOOD! I see that when it feels hard to me, I ultimately know He must see/know something I don't, and if I'll wait, His faithfulness will be made known.

Discussion Questions

1. How do you respond to God's discipline? Do you repent or continue in rebellion?

2. How does His discipline influence how you view God?

3. What situation in your life can you look back on and see how God's discipline has been for your good? How does that help you going forward?

WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY

HOSEA 8-12 (SEPTEMBER 26-30)

Read Hosea 10:11-13.

God's Way or My Way?

Ask your children which they think is better: God's way or their way?

Reread Hosea 10:12-13.

Fold a piece of paper in half. On the top of the left half, write, "God's way." On the other half, write: "Our way." On the left side, write the four things that verse 12 says are following after God. On the right side record from verse 13 what happens when we do it our way.

Look at the differences, and talk about which one is better and why.

ACTIVITY: Hand your children a potato and tell them to make it grow. Give them a little time to try to figure out how to grow it. Then go to http://www.ehow.com/how_6239373_grow-potato-water-science-project.html to find out how to root the potato to grow it in the "right way," the way that will actually work.

God is our "expert" on life. We must seek Him and trust Him to do it "His way," which is the right way.
