Central Truth
God desires that His people place their confidence and trust in Him rather than their own resources, intellect, or connections.
"It will be the lowest of the kingdoms, and it will never again lift itself up above the nations. And I will make them so small that they will not rule over the nations. And it will never again be the confidence of the house of Israel, bringing to mind the iniquity of their having turned to Egypt. Then they will know that I am the Lord GOD." (Ezekiel 29:15-16)
1 In the tenth year, in the tenth month, on the twelfth day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me: 2 “Son of man, set your face against Pharaoh king of Egypt, and prophesy against him and against all Egypt; 3 speak, and say, Thus says the Lord God:
Behold, I am against you,
Pharaoh king of Egypt,
the great dragon that lies
in the midst of his streams,
that says, ‘My Nile is my own;
I made it for myself.’
4
I will put hooks in your jaws,
and make the fish of your streams stick to your scales;
and I will draw you up out of the midst of your streams,
with all the fish of your streams
that stick to your scales.
5
And I will cast you out into the wilderness,
you and all the fish of your streams;
you shall fall on the open field,
and not be brought together or gathered.
To the beasts of the earth and to the birds of the heavens
I give you as food.
6 Then all the inhabitants of Egypt shall know that I am the LORD.
Because you 1 29:6 Hebrew they have been a staff of reed to the house of Israel, 7 when they grasped you with the hand, you broke and tore all their shoulders; and when they leaned on you, you broke and made all their loins to shake. 2 29:7 Syriac (compare Psalm 69:23); Hebrew to stand 8 Therefore thus says the Lord God: Behold, I will bring a sword upon you, and will cut off from you man and beast, 9 and the land of Egypt shall be a desolation and a waste. Then they will know that I am the LORD.
Because you 3 29:9 Hebrew he said, ‘The Nile is mine, and I made it,’ 10 therefore, behold, I am against you and against your streams, and I will make the land of Egypt an utter waste and desolation, from Migdol to Syene, as far as the border of Cush. 11 No foot of man shall pass through it, and no foot of beast shall pass through it; it shall be uninhabited forty years. 12 And I will make the land of Egypt a desolation in the midst of desolated countries, and her cities shall be a desolation forty years among cities that are laid waste. I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations, and disperse them through the countries.
13 For thus says the Lord God: At the end of forty years I will gather the Egyptians from the peoples among whom they were scattered, 14 and I will restore the fortunes of Egypt and bring them back to the land of Pathros, the land of their origin, and there they shall be a lowly kingdom. 15 It shall be the most lowly of the kingdoms, and never again exalt itself above the nations. And I will make them so small that they will never again rule over the nations. 16 And it shall never again be the reliance of the house of Israel, recalling their iniquity, when they turn to them for aid. Then they will know that I am the Lord God.”
17 In the twenty-seventh year, in the first month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me: 18 “Son of man, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made his army labor hard against Tyre. Every head was made bald, and every shoulder was rubbed bare, yet neither he nor his army got anything from Tyre to pay for the labor that he had performed against her. 19 Therefore thus says the Lord God: Behold, I will give the land of Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; and he shall carry off its wealth 4 29:19 Or multitude and despoil it and plunder it; and it shall be the wages for his army. 20 I have given him the land of Egypt as his payment for which he labored, because they worked for me, declares the Lord God.
21 On that day I will cause a horn to spring up for the house of Israel, and I will open your lips among them. Then they will know that I am the LORD.”
As a recent inductee into the 30's club, I've begun to take notice of some member benefits. My hair is actually beginning to look slightly "distinguished" in places (read gray). So I can't help but laugh when I see commercials depicting a timid and rather downtrodden graying businessman suddenly return to the big meeting with no gray and a swagger in his step. With a wink from a beautiful businesswoman, he then closes the deal. Really?
In chapter 29 Ezekiel pronounces God's judgment upon Pharaoh and Egypt for their pride and for failing Israel after putting themselves forth as worthy of Israel's trust in the face of a Babylonian invasion. God then humbles the nation of Egypt as a reminder for Israel to never again place its confidence in Egypt over the Lord.
While I might not be covertly sliding Just for Men hair color into my groceries yet, I, like Israel, often choose to root my confidence in my own resources when I face life's challenging circumstances. Rather than looking to God in faith (Proverbs 20:7), making my requests with thanksgiving (Philippians 4:6), and trusting in His goodness and sovereignty (Isaiah 46:10), I feel the need to control. Convinced that success or failure depends on me, I weary myself with worry and striving when God offers me rest and peace (Matthew 11:28-30).
What's more, God's plans are often quite different from mine! Planning is actually a good thing, but if my ultimate hope and confidence are in my plans, I can feel devastated when those plans do not come to fruition. I am reminded of the apostle Paul's words in Romans 8:28, "And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose."
As a man who has placed his faith in Christ as Savior, I can have full confidence in my loving Heavenly Father who is working for my good and His glory. Free from striving and worry, I press on with joyful anticipation for what God has in store.
1. What are you tempted to trust in besides God when you face adversity?
2. What area of your life is currently the most difficult for you to place your confidence fully in the Lord's goodness, control, and provision?
3. What first step do you believe God would have you take to trust Him in this area?
WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY
EZEKIEL 28-32 (AUGUST 1-5)
In Ezekiel 26 and 27 Ezekiel is telling about the destruction of Tyre, a nation that had become prideful. In Ezekiel 28 he is talking specifically to the king of Tyre.
Read Ezekiel 28:1-10.
What did the king of Tyre believe about himself? Who does he think he is wiser than (see verse 3)?
Read Daniel 2:20-23.
Where did Daniel believe his wisdom came from?
Read Proverbs 2:6.
Where does wisdom come from? What happens when we start believing that we are wiser than God? What happens when we forget that all wisdom comes from God? What are things you can do to remind yourself that all wisdom comes from God? How can you protect yourself from becoming prideful?
ACTIVITY: As a family, talk about the things that you will do this week to guard against pride. Also discuss ways that you can help each other remember who is the giver of all wisdom. Make bracelets to wear for the rest of the month that will remind you that God is the giver of all wisdom . . . that HE is God, and we are not!
