Central Truth

God displays His glory to inspire and encourage the devotion of His creation. When His glory is dishonored, serious consequences follow.

Key Verse | Ezekiel 10:4

Then the glory of the LORD went up from the cherub to the threshold of the temple, and the temple was filled with the cloud and the court was filled with the brightness of the glory of the LORD. (Ezekiel 10:4)

Ezekiel 10

The Glory of the LORD Leaves the Temple

Then I looked, and behold, on the expanse that was over the heads of the cherubim there appeared above them something like a sapphire, 1 10:1 Or lapis lazuli in appearance like a throne. And he said to the man clothed in linen, “Go in among the whirling wheels underneath the cherubim. Fill your hands with burning coals from between the cherubim, and scatter them over the city.”

And he went in before my eyes. Now the cherubim were standing on the south side of the house, when the man went in, and a cloud filled the inner court. And the glory of the LORD went up from the cherub to the threshold of the house, and the house was filled with the cloud, and the court was filled with the brightness of the glory of the LORD. And the sound of the wings of the cherubim was heard as far as the outer court, like the voice of God Almighty when he speaks.

And when he commanded the man clothed in linen, “Take fire from between the whirling wheels, from between the cherubim,” he went in and stood beside a wheel. And a cherub stretched out his hand from between the cherubim to the fire that was between the cherubim, and took some of it and put it into the hands of the man clothed in linen, who took it and went out. The cherubim appeared to have the form of a human hand under their wings.

And I looked, and behold, there were four wheels beside the cherubim, one beside each cherub, and the appearance of the wheels was like sparkling beryl. 10 And as for their appearance, the four had the same likeness, as if a wheel were within a wheel. 11 When they went, they went in any of their four directions 2 10:11 Hebrew to their four sides without turning as they went, but in whatever direction the front wheel 3 10:11 Hebrew the head faced, the others followed without turning as they went. 12 And their whole body, their rims, and their spokes, their wings, 4 10:12 Or their whole body, their backs, their hands, and their wings and the wheels were full of eyes all around—the wheels that the four of them had. 13 As for the wheels, they were called in my hearing “the whirling wheels.” 14 And every one had four faces: the first face was the face of the cherub, and the second face was a human face, and the third the face of a lion, and the fourth the face of an eagle.

15 And the cherubim mounted up. These were the living creatures that I saw by the Chebar canal. 16 And when the cherubim went, the wheels went beside them. And when the cherubim lifted up their wings to mount up from the earth, the wheels did not turn from beside them. 17 When they stood still, these stood still, and when they mounted up, these mounted up with them, for the spirit of the living creatures 5 10:17 Or spirit of life was in them.

18 Then the glory of the LORD went out from the threshold of the house, and stood over the cherubim. 19 And the cherubim lifted up their wings and mounted up from the earth before my eyes as they went out, with the wheels beside them. And they stood at the entrance of the east gate of the house of the LORD, and the glory of the God of Israel was over them.

20 These were the living creatures that I saw underneath the God of Israel by the Chebar canal; and I knew that they were cherubim. 21 Each had four faces, and each four wings, and underneath their wings the likeness of human hands. 22 And as for the likeness of their faces, they were the same faces whose appearance I had seen by the Chebar canal. Each one of them went straight forward.

Dive Deeper | Ezekiel 10

One of five solas developed by the Reformers to express their core beliefs about God, His Word, and faith in general, Soli Deo Gloria means "glory to God alone." All Scripture emphasizes that everything should be done expressly to glorify the Lord. To the infant nation of Israel, as Moses led them out of Egypt, God made His intentions clear: "You shall have no other gods before Me. . . . [F]or I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God . . . ." (Exodus 20:3, 5b) All glory belonged to God.

But along with requiring worship, God also gave His people unmistakable object lessons that demonstrated what a wonderful being He is, providing evidence of His glory to inspire and encourage their devotion. Moses saw the burning bush, and Israel was given the pillar of fire by night and cloud by day to guide them. When the tabernacle was finished (and later Solomon's temple), God inhabited the Most Holy Place with His abiding (shekinah) glory. God made sure Israel had a constant reminder of His presence in their midst whenever they offered sacrifices.

Tragically, in the years following Solomon's death, Israel drifted inexorably into idolatry, apostasy, and all the attendant moral perversions practiced by their pagan neighbors. It finally got to the point observed by Ezekiel in a vision in chapter 10 when God purposefully and dramatically removed His glorious presence from the heart of the Israelite nation. In stunning, surreal language Ezekiel described the departure of God's presence: "Then the glory of the LORD went up from the cherub to the threshold of the temple" (10:4), proceeded out through the east gate of the temple (10:18-19), and ultimately withdrew from the city of Jerusalem, never to return until the restoration of God's personal reign over Israel in the yet-future millennial kingdom.

Today, though, God has not left the world without a means to observe His glory. To all that call themselves believers in Christ, the Lord commands in 1 Corinthians 10:31: "Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." Soli Deo Gloria!

Discussion Questions

1. In addition to the examples above, what are some of the numerous instances Scripture records of God putting His glory on display to encourage His people and engender fear in those opposed to Him? Check out Exodus 19:16-24; 1 Kings 18:20-39; 2 Kings 6:15-17; Isaiah 6:1-8; Ezekiel 1:4-28; Matthew 17:1-8; and Acts 9:1-8.

2. What unexpected container for God's glory does Paul write about in 2 Corinthians 4:6-7 (NIV)?

3. Peter describes what counterintuitive process that is necessary in order for believers to bring praise and glory to God? (1 Peter 1:6-7)

4. What two notable baroque composers signed many of their works with the initials S.D.G. (Soli Deo Gloria) as a statement of their devotion to God?

WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY

EZEKIEL 8-12 (JULY 4-8)

Read Ezekiel 11:16-21.

Who will bring the people back to their land? When the people return to their homeland, what will they do (verse 18)? And what will God do for them in verse 19?

The people of Israel were brought back to the land as God promised, and they were diligent to remove the idols they had worshiped previously. What do you think we should be diligent to do in our lives? What idols are you tempted to put in front of your full devotion to God?

When we are diligent to remove things of this world that tempt us away from God and His desires for us, He will also give us the things He gave the Israelites in verse 19. Review what those were.

ACTIVITY: In verse 19 God says He will take away our heart of stone and give us a heart of flesh (or a tender heart). Get a stone (at least the size of a lemon), a sponge, and a cup of water. Talk about the different characteristics of the stone and the sponge. What will happen when you pour some water on the stone? What about water poured onto the sponge? If the water represents God's Word, His truth, and the desire to follow Him, which one does your heart need to be like to absorb God's ways?
