This month's memory verse

Isaiah 9:6

For to us a child is born,
    to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

A Bridge and a Promise

Key Verse | Genesis 28:14

Your descendants will be as numerous as the dust of the earth! They will spread out in all directions—to the west and the east, to the north and the south. And all the families of the earth will be blessed through you and your descendants.

Genesis 28:13-15

13At the top of the stairway stood the Lord, and he said, “I am the Lord, the God of your grandfather Abraham, and the God of your father, Isaac. The ground you are lying on belongs to you. I am giving it to you and your descendants. 14Your descendants will be as numerous as the dust of the earth! They will spread out in all directions—to the west and the east, to the north and the south. And all the families of the earth will be blessed through you and your descendants. 15What’s more, I am with you, and I will protect you wherever you go. One day I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have finished giving you everything I have promised you.”

Devotion

Have you ever woken up from a dream and wondered about its meaning?

The Lord spoke to Jacob in a dream, and some of its meaning was clear: God promised to give Jacob and his offspring the land on which he was laying. He promised that Jacob’s descendants would become numerous and spread throughout the earth, and that through them all the families on earth would be blessed. For a young man who was still single and had no children and no permanent home, this was an amazing promise.

God always keeps his promises; Jacob’s family line grew and became the nation of Israel. The land Jacob was lying in was Canaan, the Promised Land, the land that God gave to Israel. And despite Israel’s frequent disobedience, God would never leave them, because he had promised to finish what he started.

But what about the ladder? What was the meaning of this bridge between heaven and earth? Many centuries later, Jesus told one of Jacob’s descendants, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man” (John 1:51). Jesus was revealing that he is the bridge between God and humanity! Because of our sin, we are separated from a holy God, and there is nothing we can do to save ourselves. But God loved us so much that he sent his Son, Jesus, to rescue us. Jesus lived the perfect life we could never live, died on the cross to take the punishment our sins deserve, and rose from the dead three days later, defeating sin and death! Through faith in Jesus, we can be forgiven of our sins, restored to a relationship with God, and receive the gift of eternal life. Salvation through faith in Jesus is how God would bless all the families of the earth, just as he promised Jacob. The bridge, the ladder, is Jesus!

Questions

  1. If you were Jacob, how would you have reacted to such a dream? Better yet, what does Jacob’s dream mean for you today?
  2. How is Jesus the ladder, or bridge, between us and God? How can we have life and a relationship with God because of Jesus? (Hint: see Titus 3:4-6)

Optional Family Activity

Do you know how to share the gospel using the Three Circles illustration? If so, practice sharing it with each other. If not, google it or have someone show it to you. Pray for someone by name that you know who does not know the way to God and ask God to give you an opportunity to share the good news with them.
