This month's memory verse

Matthew 28:19-20

"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."

Why do people get angry in Ephesus?

Key Verse | Acts 19:23

About that time there arose no little disturbance concerning the Way.

Acts 19:21-27

21Afterward Paul felt compelled by the Spirit* to go over to Macedonia and Achaia before going to Jerusalem. “And after that,” he said, “I must go on to Rome!” 22He sent his two assistants, Timothy and Erastus, ahead to Macedonia while he stayed awhile longer in the province of Asia.

The Riot in Ephesus

23About that time, serious trouble developed in Ephesus concerning the Way. 24It began with Demetrius, a silversmith who had a large business manufacturing silver shrines of the Greek goddess Artemis.* He kept many craftsmen busy. 25He called them together, along with others employed in similar trades, and addressed them as follows:

“Gentlemen, you know that our wealth comes from this business. 26But as you have seen and heard, this man Paul has persuaded many people that handmade gods aren’t really gods at all. And he’s done this not only here in Ephesus but throughout the entire province! 27Of course, I’m not just talking about the loss of public respect for our business. I’m also concerned that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will lose its influence and that Artemis—this magnificent goddess worshiped throughout the province of Asia and all around the world—will be robbed of her great prestige!”

Footnotes

19:21 Or decided in his spirit.
19:24 Artemis is otherwise known as Diana.

Observe Acts 19:21-27

We’ve been journeying through Acts 19, where Paul has spent about 2 years in one city. Can you remember what the name of the city is? Ephesus!

In Acts 19:21-27, Paul finds himself faced with a difficult situation. There’s a big crowd of angry people that forms in the city who are upset about the gospel being spread through the city. Read Acts 19:21-27 to find out more about why the people were upset.

  • What was Demetrius’ job, and what did he make? (v. 24)
  • Who did Demetrius gather to talk to, and why did he need them on his side? (v. 25)
  • What had Paul been teaching that upset Demetrius so much? (v. 26)
  • Demetrius says gods “made with hands are not gods.” What does that tell you about what the Ephesians had been worshiping? (v. 26)
  • Demetrius says two things are at risk: his business, and the temple of the goddess Artemis. Which of those two things do you think Demetrius cared about more and how can you tell from what he says? (v. 27)

Pray

Every week, pick a day to pray for people around the world who haven’t heard about Jesus yet. The Joshua Project website posts a new unreached people group every day—pull it up at dinner, before bed, or on the way to school and pray for them together.
