Central Truth
One who trusts in the Lord will not be moved but abides forever.
Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion,
which cannot be moved, but abides forever.
As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
so the LORD surrounds his people,
from this time forth and forevermore.
(Psalm 125:1-2)
1
Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion,
which cannot be moved, but abides forever.
2
As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
so the LORD surrounds his people,
from this time forth and forevermore.
3
For the scepter of wickedness shall not rest
on the land allotted to the righteous,
lest the righteous stretch out
their hands to do wrong.
4
Do good, O LORD, to those who are good,
and to those who are upright in their hearts!
5
But those who turn aside to their crooked ways
the LORD will lead away with evildoers!
Peace be upon Israel!
For four years, my husband and I volunteered for Young Life ministries in the Richardson area. Young Life is a ministry whose mission is that every adolescent will have the opportunity to meet Jesus Christ and follow Him. Each summer we got to take groups of high school students to camp in beautiful Colorado. The camp is nestled in between the most beautiful mountains your eyes have ever laid upon. Over the summers that we got to spend there I would always find myself just stopping and staring at God's creation. Standing in awe of the works of His hands and pinching myself that I get to see His wonders all around me.
As I read through Psalm 125, especially verses 1 and 2, I am reminded of these mountains. I'm reminded of their vastness. That they extended as far as the eye could see and that they could never be shaken. As the mountains surrounded us in Colorado, our God surrounds His people every day. As God's people we live under His invincible protection. It doesn't mean that we won't experience trial or despair. Or that we won't have seasons in the valley. It means that in a world that is constantly changing we can look to the Lord and our trust in Him will not be shaken.
As Jonathan Parnell writes, "Mount Zion cannot be shaken because another mountain was. Actually it was a hill, called Golgotha. Years after this Psalm was written, one Friday afternoon, at about the ninth hour, the promised King died. Jesus Christ died for us, bearing the wrath we deserved. He suffered in our place, making atonement for our sins." Jesus conquered our sins through his death on the cross, and then He conquered death by His resurrection. Because of this we can live our days under the Lord's invincible protection. We can call upon Him, we can trust in Him and He will surround us. He does not change and He is our dwelling place. Trust in Him today.
Do you find it easy or difficult to trust in the Lord with every aspect of your life? Why or why not?
How has the Lord surrounded you in your life and under His invincible protection?
What are other examples in Scripture that speak of God's character and why He can be trusted?
