Central Truth

Our hope for restoration comes from God alone.

Key Verse | Lamentations 5:21

Restore us to You, O LORD, that we may be restored.
(Lamentations 5:21a)

Lamentations 5

Restore Us to Yourself, O LORD

Remember, O LORD, what has befallen us;
    look, and see our disgrace!
Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers,
    our homes to foreigners.
We have become orphans, fatherless;
    our mothers are like widows.
We must pay for the water we drink;
    the wood we get must be bought.
Our pursuers are at our necks;
    we are weary; we are given no rest.
We have given the hand to Egypt, and to Assyria,
    to get bread enough.
Our fathers sinned, and are no more;
    and we bear their iniquities.
Slaves rule over us;
    there is none to deliver us from their hand.
We get our bread at the peril of our lives,
    because of the sword in the wilderness.
10  Our skin is hot as an oven
    with the burning heat of famine.
11  Women are raped in Zion,
    young women in the towns of Judah.
12  Princes are hung up by their hands;
    no respect is shown to the elders.
13  Young men are compelled to grind at the mill,
    and boys stagger under loads of wood.
14  The old men have left the city gate,
    the young men their music.
15  The joy of our hearts has ceased;
    our dancing has been turned to mourning.
16  The crown has fallen from our head;
    woe to us, for we have sinned!
17  For this our heart has become sick,
    for these things our eyes have grown dim,
18  for Mount Zion which lies desolate;
    jackals prowl over it.
19  But you, O LORD, reign forever;
    your throne endures to all generations.
20  Why do you forget us forever,
    why do you forsake us for so many days?
21  Restore us to yourself, O LORD, that we may be restored!
    Renew our days as of old—
22  unless you have utterly rejected us,
    and you remain exceedingly angry with us.

Dive Deeper | Lamentations 5

Since the beginning of time, man has been prone to wander. We are born into sin, live in a broken world, and can be restored only by the sovereign God whose grace transcends all.

Lamentations 5:1-18 highlights the state of desperation that the Israelites were in. Remember, God's people were disgraced, destitute, financially shipwrecked, exhausted by enemies who were trying to destroy them, afraid for the safety of their very lives, and had only themselves to blame for their condition. Somehow, this picture of God's people does not seem difficult to understand. Brokenness and hopelessness surround our world today. Hearts are sick and weary, and joy has left even the hearts of believers. We look around and ask God, "Why?" We feel abandoned and forgotten, yet in these times, God reaches out and longs for us to return to Him! (Isaiah 30:15)

This prayer concludes in verses 19-22 with a cry out for God to grant restoration. The Random House Dictionary tells us that restore means to bring back to the original state of being, to reconstruct, to mend, to renew. The Bible tells us that there is nothing in ourselves that can produce restoration, but rather that restoration is granted by our Creator. (Psalm 80:3; Ephesians 2:8) Only God can mend that which is broken; only God can offer you total restoration and bring you back into relationship with Himself. The question is, "Will you respond?" God wants to bring you back from wherever you have wandered.

My story of waywardness is one of taking pride in pleasing others, doing the right thing, and striving to accomplish. God constantly reminds me that my own heart is desperately wicked. Satan is lurking around to devour and deceive followers of Christ. When I believe his lie, seeking to live a life of self-sufficiency and control, I come up empty-handed. Because of my evil nature, I am prone to wander, so I must guard my heart and cling to the truth of God's Word. (1 Timothy 6:20-21)

Discussion Questions

1. In what ways might you be wandering from God? (Romans 7:18-23)

2. What circumstance in your life has brought grief and sadness to your heart lately?

3. What are some of the unchanging characteristics of God that bring you hope?

4. Do you think you are too old, too young, too broken, or too righteous for renewal?

WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY

LAMENTATIONS 3 – EZEKIEL 2 (JUNE 20-24)

Read Lamentations 3:19-33.

What do you learn about God's love in verse 22? What do you learn about His mercy for each day in verse 23?

In verse 27 you see the word yoke. Do you know what a yoke is? Look up on the Internet a picture of an ox in a yoke and talk about what the yoke does for the animal. If the animal tries to go its own way, what does the yoke do?

Why is it important for us to submit or to live under the yoke of God's guidance? From what you learned in verses 22 and 23, why can you trust God's yoke?

ACTIVITY: Let's simulate what it is like to be led by a yoke. Set up an obstacle course in your house or backyard. Have each person get a jacket from his closet. The first person to go through the obstacle course should put his jacket on backwards without his arms in the sleeves. Then blindfold him. Now have another member of the family guide him through the obstacle course without talking. She will take the sleeves behind the "walker" and will use them to guide him through. As you are doing it, talk about God as our guide and how we need to be paying attention to Him to recognize His efforts to guide us along the right paths.
