Central Truth
Obedience to God often leads us into surprising circumstances that may be contrary to our own expectations and plans.
Then the officials were angry at Jeremiah and beat him, and they put him in jail in the house of Jonathan the scribe, which they had made into the prison. For Jeremiah had come into the dungeon, that is, the vaulted cell; and Jeremiah stayed there many days. (Jeremiah 37:15-16)
1 Zedekiah the son of Josiah, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah, reigned instead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim. 2 But neither he nor his servants nor the people of the land listened to the words of the LORD that he spoke through Jeremiah the prophet.
3 King Zedekiah sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah, and Zephaniah the priest, the son of Maaseiah, to Jeremiah the prophet, saying, “Please pray for us to the LORD our God.” 4 Now Jeremiah was still going in and out among the people, for he had not yet been put in prison. 5 The army of Pharaoh had come out of Egypt. And when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard news about them, they withdrew from Jerusalem.
6 Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet: 7 “Thus says the LORD, God of Israel: Thus shall you say to the king of Judah who sent you to me to inquire of me, ‘Behold, Pharaoh's army that came to help you is about to return to Egypt, to its own land. 8 And the Chaldeans shall come back and fight against this city. They shall capture it and burn it with fire. 9 Thus says the LORD, Do not deceive yourselves, saying, “The Chaldeans will surely go away from us,” for they will not go away. 10 For even if you should defeat the whole army of Chaldeans who are fighting against you, and there remained of them only wounded men, every man in his tent, they would rise up and burn this city with fire.’”
11 Now when the Chaldean army had withdrawn from Jerusalem at the approach of Pharaoh's army, 12 Jeremiah set out from Jerusalem to go to the land of Benjamin to receive his portion there among the people. 13 When he was at the Benjamin Gate, a sentry there named Irijah the son of Shelemiah, son of Hananiah, seized Jeremiah the prophet, saying, “You are deserting to the Chaldeans.” 14 And Jeremiah said, “It is a lie; I am not deserting to the Chaldeans.” But Irijah would not listen to him, and seized Jeremiah and brought him to the officials. 15 And the officials were enraged at Jeremiah, and they beat him and imprisoned him in the house of Jonathan the secretary, for it had been made a prison.
16 When Jeremiah had come to the dungeon cells and remained there many days, 17 King Zedekiah sent for him and received him. The king questioned him secretly in his house and said, “Is there any word from the LORD?” Jeremiah said, “There is.” Then he said, “You shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.” 18 Jeremiah also said to King Zedekiah, “What wrong have I done to you or your servants or this people, that you have put me in prison? 19 Where are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying, ‘The king of Babylon will not come against you and against this land’? 20 Now hear, please, O my lord the king: let my humble plea come before you and do not send me back to the house of Jonathan the secretary, lest I die there.” 21 So King Zedekiah gave orders, and they committed Jeremiah to the court of the guard. And a loaf of bread was given him daily from the bakers' street, until all the bread of the city was gone. So Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.
My name is Mel, and I am believer who struggles with control. I am extremely type A, have a color-coded, detailed daily planner, and I lay out my clothes for the week on Sunday nights. I guess you could say I'm borderline obsessive compulsive disorder. After grad school I planned out the next five years of my life: marry my best friend (check); get a job within children's ministry where I get to serve families and kids (check); live in a small cozy house and enjoy the freedom of being able to sleep in on weekends and travel with my beloved whenever we want (check and check). Nowhere in my five year plan did I expect to have a baby two years into marriage! I remember crying out to God, "Surely this is a mistake; I'm still a newlywed and getting to know my husband. I'm doing full-time ministry. Are you sure you've got the right girl, Lord?"
I bet this is similar to what the prophet Jeremiah was thinking when he was thrown into prison and beaten. Also known as the weeping prophet, Jeremiah was crying out to the people of Judah, begging them to turn away from their sinful ways and repent. Even though it was difficult for him to bring the message of judgment to Judah, he did so out of obedience and love for God. I'm sure Jeremiah would have chosen a path that didn't include being flogged and then being thrown into a cold, damp prison cell. But he trusted that the Lord was sovereign and that God's plans were bigger than his own.
I was so confused when I found out I was pregnant. It took me several months to let go of control and to allow the Spirit to take over my anxious thoughts. The two verses I clung to were Proverbs 16:9 (NIV), "In his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps," and Philippians 4:6-7. It wasn't until I saw the sonogram of my baby that I realized God's bigger purpose . . . for me to be a mommy!
1. What is there in your life that you haven't fully given up to the Lord?
2. Have you shared this with spiritual mentor/s? How can they help you fully release this issue to God?
3. Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV) says, "'For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'" Have you seen God's work in your life to fulfill these promises?
WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY
JEREMIAH 35-39 (MAY 23-27)
Read Jeremiah 38:1-13.
What did Jeremiah tell the people God had told him? How did the people respond to him? How do you think Jeremiah might have felt when he was stuck in the mud at the bottom of the cistern?
What did Ebed-melech do?
Now read Jeremiah 39:15-17. Who sent Ebed-melech to help Jeremiah?
Have you ever been persecuted for speaking God's truth? What happened? How did you feel when you were being persecuted? Did you ever feel like maybe God had forgotten you? What can you do when you are in the middle of the persecution?
Activity: Think about a situation in which you were being persecuted and another person came to help. Might have been a boss that stood up for you when you were doing the right thing or a friend at school that stepped in when another kid was making fun of you. Then, take time to write that person a note to say thanks for helping you to continue to do the right thing.
