Central Truth

Christ is seated at the right hand of God in a place of honor and power. He wants us to recognize His authority and dominion over our lives and live accordingly. Those who don’t believe will be labeled an enemy of God. Your position now determines your position later.

Key Verse | Psalm 110:1

The Lord says to my Lord:
"Sit at my right hand,
until I make your enemies your footstool."
(Psalm 110:1)

Psalm 110

Sit at My Right Hand

A Psalm of David.

The LORD says to my Lord:
    “Sit at my right hand,
until I make your enemies your footstool.”

The LORD sends forth from Zion
    your mighty scepter.
    Rule in the midst of your enemies!
Your people will offer themselves freely
    on the day of your power, 1 110:3 Or on the day you lead your forces
    in holy garments; 2 110:3 Masoretic Text; some Hebrew manuscripts and Jerome on the holy mountains
from the womb of the morning,
    the dew of your youth will be yours. 3 110:3 The meaning of the Hebrew is uncertain
The LORD has sworn
    and will not change his mind,
“You are a priest forever
    after the order of Melchizedek.”

The Lord is at your right hand;
    he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath.
He will execute judgment among the nations,
    filling them with corpses;
he will shatter chiefs 4 110:6 Or the head
    over the wide earth.
He will drink from the brook by the way;
    therefore he will lift up his head.

Dive Deeper | Psalm 110

This passage is heralding Christ’s ultimate position at the right hand of God and His absolute dominion over the whole world as the culmination of all God has promised: His eternal priesthood, the multiplication of His people, and the subjugation of His enemies. This place of honor is Christ’s reward for fulfilling the role God had for Him. He gets to be with the Father and watch as God completes what He set out to do. It is also the notification to all those who don’t believe He is who He says that a day will come when they will be “shattered,” declared an enemy of God, and laid under His feet.

Culturally, few people would admit to being an enemy of God. They might admit to apathy or a lack of interest, but few would identify as being an enemy. That’s just it, though. The Bible states that we all have gone astray (Isaiah 53:6) and that a chasm exists between us and God that only Christ can bridge as the King and Lord of our lives. Romans 1:20 states, “For His invisible attributes, namely, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.” Ouch. We all are enemies unless we seek Him, and then we get to take part in His reward as heirs (Galatians 4:7).

Luckily, 2 Peter 3:9 tells us, “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.” He is giving us every opportunity to come to repentance and be saved. With Him, we get to live abundantly and look forward to our place with Him in eternity. Without Him, life is hopeless, and the future is devastating. Have you accepted His all sufficient grace? If not, don’t wait another minute. Your final position hangs in the balance (Romans 2:5).

Discussion Questions

1. Have you considered Christ’s position in your life? Have you made Him Lord of all that you have?

2. In what ways have you been an enemy of God? What will you do to change that today?

3. Are you sharing your faith with others who need to know the love and grace of Christ? If not, what is keeping you from it?
