Central Truth

Following Jesus requires obedience, perseverance, and endurance. The world is filled with trials and temptations. But Jesus has overcome the world, and in Him we find strength, peace, and rest. Our job is to remain in Him (John 15:1-17). He must become greater; we must become less. (John 3:30)

Key Verse | Jeremiah 12:5

"If you have run with footmen and they have tired you out,
Then how can you compete with horses?
If you fall down in a land of peace,
How will you do in the thicket of the Jordan?"
(Jeremiah 12:5)

Jeremiah 12

Jeremiah's Complaint

Righteous are you, O LORD,
    when I complain to you;
    yet I would plead my case before you.
Why does the way of the wicked prosper?
    Why do all who are treacherous thrive?
You plant them, and they take root;
    they grow and produce fruit;
you are near in their mouth
    and far from their heart.
But you, O LORD, know me;
    you see me, and test my heart toward you.
Pull them out like sheep for the slaughter,
    and set them apart for the day of slaughter.
How long will the land mourn
    and the grass of every field wither?
For the evil of those who dwell in it
    the beasts and the birds are swept away,
    because they said, “He will not see our latter end.”

The LORD Answers Jeremiah

“If you have raced with men on foot, and they have wearied you,
    how will you compete with horses?
And if in a safe land you are so trusting,
    what will you do in the thicket of the Jordan?
For even your brothers and the house of your father,
    even they have dealt treacherously with you;
    they are in full cry after you;
do not believe them,
    though they speak friendly words to you.”

“I have forsaken my house;
    I have abandoned my heritage;
I have given the beloved of my soul
    into the hands of her enemies.
My heritage has become to me
    like a lion in the forest;
she has lifted up her voice against me;
    therefore I hate her.
Is my heritage to me like a hyena's lair?
    Are the birds of prey against her all around?
Go, assemble all the wild beasts;
    bring them to devour.
10  Many shepherds have destroyed my vineyard;
    they have trampled down my portion;
they have made my pleasant portion
    a desolate wilderness.
11  They have made it a desolation;
    desolate, it mourns to me.
The whole land is made desolate,
    but no man lays it to heart.
12  Upon all the bare heights in the desert
    destroyers have come,
for the sword of the LORD devours
    from one end of the land to the other;
    no flesh has peace.
13  They have sown wheat and have reaped thorns;
    they have tired themselves out but profit nothing.
They shall be ashamed of their 1 12:13 Hebrew your harvests
    because of the fierce anger of the LORD.”

14 Thus says the LORD concerning all my evil neighbors who touch the heritage that I have given my people Israel to inherit: “Behold, I will pluck them up from their land, and I will pluck up the house of Judah from among them. 15 And after I have plucked them up, I will again have compassion on them, and I will bring them again each to his heritage and each to his land. 16 And it shall come to pass, if they will diligently learn the ways of my people, to swear by my name, ‘As the LORD lives,’ even as they taught my people to swear by Baal, then they shall be built up in the midst of my people. 17 But if any nation will not listen, then I will utterly pluck it up and destroy it, declares the LORD.”

Dive Deeper | Jeremiah 12

God has used Jeremiah 12:5 more than once to speak His truth to me. The first time was a winter morning in 2010. After I took my children to school, I was physically and emotionally exhausted. My grandmother who raised me had recently passed away, and the weight of being my children's only parent was taking its toll. I drove home, cried, and literally called out for Jesus. I asked for His strength, then I fell asleep.

When I woke, I asked God to speak to me and opened my Bible to this passage: "Then the Lord replied to me, 'If racing against mere men makes you tired, how will you race against horses? If you stumble and fall on open ground, what will you do in the thickets near the Jordan?'" (Jeremiah 12:5, NLT)

He reminded me that I'm in training. He played on my competitive nature and motivated me. He answered my prayer and gave me strength.

The second time wasn't so pleasant. It was a smack down. My loving Father was tapping on my shoulder, letting me know He was upset with my disobedience. But I felt comfortable in the situation and rationalized exceptions. Then, out of nowhere, I fell and tore a ligament in my knee. He revealed His truth to me later: I stumbled and fell on open ground. What would I do when faced with truly formidable temptations?

God either lets things happen or makes them happen. While having surgery was ultimately good for me (Romans 8:28), God used this injury to remind me that I am His (Ephesians 1:3-14), I am always in training, and He requires faithfulness and obedience.

I'm no Jeremiah, but I am learning to enjoy the discipline that obedience provides. I still get tired, stumble, and fall. But God is faithful and helps me plan for success. I have a community of believers who love me enough to confront me with kindness. I study and teach God's Word. I pray throughout the day, and I lean hard on my husband because "I can do all things through Him who strengthens me" (Philippians 4:13).

Discussion Questions

1. What do you do when you're tired? Work out? Take vitamins? Drink coffee? These verses comfort and strengthen me: Matthew 11:28-30, Joshua 1:9, Jeremiah 29:11-13, and Isaiah 40:28-31.

2. Do you truly believe that Jesus will answer when you call Him, never leave you, always know what to do, and want you to let Him love you? Check out Third Day's Revelation CD. Do tracks 3, 7, or 8 reveal anything to you?

3. Do you plan in advance how you will handle tempting situations? Do you know that God won't allow you to be tempted with something you can't handle with Him? And when you are tempted, He is faithful and will show you a way out. (1 Corinthians 10:13) Then you just have to be obedient and RUN. So you can compete with horses!

WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY

JEREMIAH 10-14 (APR 18-22)

Read Jeremiah 10:12-16.

What do these verses say about God? About His power? About His knowledge?

Why is God not like the "idols" the people were creating? Talk about all the differences between God and the man-made idols.

Activity: Using sidewalk chalk or paper and crayons, go outside and draw pictures or list words of all the things God has created. Remember that He created you. What is special about who you are? Thank God for specific things that He did in making you unique. Read Psalm 139.
