Central Truth

We are created to worship God and give Him glory, but it is easy to slip into a mindset that promotes the incorrect thinking that God needs both us and what we bring to Him.

Key Verse | Job 35:7

“If you are righteous, what do you give to God, or what does he receive from your hand?” (Job 35:7)

Job 35

Elihu Condemns Job

And Elihu answered and said:

“Do you think this to be just?
    Do you say, ‘It is my right before God,’
that you ask, ‘What advantage have I?
    How am I better off than if I had sinned?’
I will answer you
    and your friends with you.
Look at the heavens, and see;
    and behold the clouds, which are higher than you.
If you have sinned, what do you accomplish against him?
    And if your transgressions are multiplied, what do you do to him?
If you are righteous, what do you give to him?
    Or what does he receive from your hand?
Your wickedness concerns a man like yourself,
    and your righteousness a son of man.

Because of the multitude of oppressions people cry out;
    they call for help because of the arm of the mighty. 1 35:9 Or the many
10  But none says, ‘Where is God my Maker,
    who gives songs in the night,
11  who teaches us more than the beasts of the earth
    and makes us wiser than the birds of the heavens?’
12  There they cry out, but he does not answer,
    because of the pride of evil men.
13  Surely God does not hear an empty cry,
    nor does the Almighty regard it.
14  How much less when you say that you do not see him,
    that the case is before him, and you are waiting for him!
15  And now, because his anger does not punish,
    and he does not take much note of transgression, 2 35:15 Theodotion, Symmachus (compare Vulgate); the meaning of the Hebrew word is uncertain
16  Job opens his mouth in empty talk;
    he multiplies words without knowledge.”

Dive Deeper | Job 35

As Elihu continues to address Job’s complaints against God (His silence – Job 13:22-24, His lack of justice – Job 19:6-7 & 27:2, and the lack of reward for his righteousness – Job 35:3), he zeroes in on this last issue. From the outset of this book, Job’s character has been established (Job 1:1), and yet Job has suffered without an explanation from God. He goes as far as to question why God has not rewarded his innocence.
I can't argue with God about the difficulties in my life from Job’s position. I can't claim purity and blamelessness. God has humbled me and allowed me to begin to grasp how deeply I need His grace.
There are times when I try to reason that if I don’t have Job’s character, at least I seek to honor God with my time, talent, and treasures. “God, why don’t You take my struggles away from me? I try to be a good friend. I gladly give to You with a humble heart, acknowledging that it is only through Your provision that I have anything of value worth giving. I know there are things that I could do to improve, but I’m trying so hard.”
Elihu’s response to Job is to point out God’s sovereignty. It brings to mind the words of the worship song Sacrifice: “And my righteousness is as filthy rags, but You’ve exchanged them for the good things that You have.” Like Job, my acts of worship are not insurance from negative circumstances, nor do they entitle me to God’s blessings. Because of His redeeming love He takes my sin-stained attempts at righteousness and uses them for His glory. He gladly receives what I bring to Him. What He wants most is my heart. “The sacrifices God desires are a humble spirit – O God, a humble and repentant heart you will not reject.” (Psalms 51:17)

1. What is the work of God? (See John 6:29 for Jesus' answer.)

2. Are you trusting in your own righteousness and good works to make you right with God? (See Ephesians 2:8-9.)
