IS GOD YOUR KING OR MERELY YOUR CONSULTANT?

Psalm 93

The Lord Reigns

  The LORD reigns; he is robed in majesty;
    the LORD is robed; he has put on strength as his belt.
  Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved.
  Your throne is established from of old;
    you are from everlasting.
  The floods have lifted up, O LORD,
    the floods have lifted up their voice;
    the floods lift up their roaring.
  Mightier than the thunders of many waters,
    mightier than the waves of the sea,
    the LORD on high is mighty!
  Your decrees are very trustworthy;
    holiness befits your house,
    O LORD, forevermore.

IS GOD YOUR KING OR MERELY YOUR CONSULTANT?

Key Verse | Psalm 93:1

The Lord reigns; he is robed in majesty;
the Lord is robed; he has put on strength as his belt.
Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved.
(Psalm 93:1)

Central Truth

The Lord is our King. Everything we have is His, and thus, we must be subject to His will and not our own. Is this difficult? Yes. But is it necessary? Absolutely.

A few years ago, I started to fight as a mixed martial artist (a/k/a “MMA”). For those of you not familiar with MMA, it’s a combat sport that utilizes multiple fighting styles (e.g., wrestling, Muay Thai, Jiu Jitsu). To be brutally honest, the reason I started MMA was out of fear. I was terrified of physical confrontation, and I knew I had to tackle it head on. The bitter irony was I had a misguided fear of wrestling against man, and yet, I had no fear wrestling against our eternal King and Creator of the world.

As a control freak, I had plans for every aspect of my life—money, kids, marriage, time, etc. In computer terms, I viewed God as a new app to help advance my agenda, rather than accepting God as an entirely different operating system to radically transform every aspect of my life. God wasn’t my King, as the psalmist boldly proclaims in verse 1. He was my consultant. I cheapened God’s power and authority in my life, and I relegated him to a lowly position, thus making me the king. I didn’t submit to His authority; rather, I used Him. And in doing so, I never found peace. Tim Keller said, “Submitting to a king means we have to subordinate our own will to the king—and no one yearns for that.” I agree, and I would add that no one yearns for that except those who truly know and love the King.

In my walk with God, I struggle daily to acknowledge His Kingship. I still want to do what I want to do. I still want to call His resources "mine." And I still want to go my own way. However, when I obey the Father and submit to His will for my life, I get to taste the freedom and peace that comes from trusting in a loving Father and King. And I am once again reminded God is good, He can be trusted, and He doesn't make mistakes.
