Central Truth

Our hearts should break for those who are heading down the road of life without Christ.

Key Verse | Jeremiah 8:3

"And death will be chosen rather than life by all the remnant that remains of this evil family, that remains in all the places to which I have driven them," declares the LORD of hosts. (Jeremiah 8:3)

Jeremiah 8

At that time, declares the LORD, the bones of the kings of Judah, the bones of its officials, the bones of the priests, the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem shall be brought out of their tombs. And they shall be spread before the sun and the moon and all the host of heaven, which they have loved and served, which they have gone after, and which they have sought and worshiped. And they shall not be gathered or buried. They shall be as dung on the surface of the ground. Death shall be preferred to life by all the remnant that remains of this evil family in all the places where I have driven them, declares the LORD of hosts.

Sin and Treachery

You shall say to them, Thus says the LORD:
When men fall, do they not rise again?
    If one turns away, does he not return?
Why then has this people turned away
    in perpetual backsliding?
They hold fast to deceit;
    they refuse to return.
I have paid attention and listened,
    but they have not spoken rightly;
no man relents of his evil,
    saying, ‘What have I done?’
Everyone turns to his own course,
    like a horse plunging headlong into battle.
Even the stork in the heavens
    knows her times,
and the turtledove, swallow, and crane 1 8:7 The meaning of the Hebrew word is uncertain
    keep the time of their coming,
but my people know not
    the rules 2 8:7 Or just decrees of the LORD.

How can you say, ‘We are wise,
    and the law of the LORD is with us’?
But behold, the lying pen of the scribes
    has made it into a lie.
The wise men shall be put to shame;
    they shall be dismayed and taken;
behold, they have rejected the word of the LORD,
    so what wisdom is in them?
10  Therefore I will give their wives to others
    and their fields to conquerors,
because from the least to the greatest
    everyone is greedy for unjust gain;
from prophet to priest,
    everyone deals falsely.
11  They have healed the wound of my people lightly,
    saying, ‘Peace, peace,’
    when there is no peace.
12  Were they ashamed when they committed abomination?
    No, they were not at all ashamed;
    they did not know how to blush.
Therefore they shall fall among the fallen;
    when I punish them, they shall be overthrown,
    says the LORD.
13  When I would gather them, declares the LORD,
    there are no grapes on the vine,
    nor figs on the fig tree;
even the leaves are withered,
    and what I gave them has passed away from them.” 3 8:13 The meaning of the Hebrew is uncertain

14  Why do we sit still?
Gather together; let us go into the fortified cities
    and perish there,
for the LORD our God has doomed us to perish
    and has given us poisoned water to drink,
    because we have sinned against the LORD.
15  We looked for peace, but no good came;
    for a time of healing, but behold, terror.

16  “The snorting of their horses is heard from Dan;
    at the sound of the neighing of their stallions
    the whole land quakes.
They come and devour the land and all that fills it,
    the city and those who dwell in it.
17  For behold, I am sending among you serpents,
    adders that cannot be charmed,
    and they shall bite you,”
    declares the LORD.

Jeremiah Grieves for His People

18  My joy is gone; grief is upon me; 4 8:18 Compare Septuagint; the meaning of the Hebrew is uncertain
    my heart is sick within me.
19  Behold, the cry of the daughter of my people
    from the length and breadth of the land:
“Is the LORD not in Zion?
    Is her King not in her?”
“Why have they provoked me to anger with their carved images
    and with their foreign idols?”
20  “The harvest is past, the summer is ended,
    and we are not saved.”
21  For the wound of the daughter of my people is my heart wounded;
    I mourn, and dismay has taken hold on me.

22  Is there no balm in Gilead?
    Is there no physician there?
Why then has the health of the daughter of my people
    not been restored?

Dive Deeper | Jeremiah 8

When people realize they are going in the wrong direction, it only makes sense for them to turn around. Jeremiah boldly confronted his people again and again with their sins and painted a gloomy picture of the consequences that sin would bring. The people of Judah were hardheaded and stubborn. They had lost their way concerning God's will for their lives – they were speeding down the highway to hell.

Our family has a house tucked in the woods in East Texas. MapQuest, TomTom, and Garmin can get you close, but not to the house. You see, these state-of-the-art navigation devices show roads that at some point were planned for the area but never built, or started and never completed. Roads to nowhere. Dead ends. We warn people, and our printed instructions say, "Your navigation system may show that it can get you to the house, but please follow our written instructions." Still, I can't tell you how many times our family and friends arrive later than expected because they were lost along the way – misled by what they believed was sound advice and a good path. I can so easily relate! I do the same thing – trust worldly advice that seems so right! My plan always looks good – why do I need God's plan?

Jeremiah wanted his people off of their self-consumed, self-focused highway to hell. His heart broke as he watched them reject God. Every day, I am around people dying in sin, rejecting God, traveling a dangerous road to a true "dead" end. But is my heart broken for the lost? Am I urgently crying out to them, speaking the truth in love (Proverbs 27:5-6) to get them on the right path?

I need Jeremiah's passionate concern to be moved to action. Join me in prayer today for God to break our hearts for this world and move us to action to get our families, friends, and neighbors off of the highway to hell and onto the path toward everlasting life! The journey may not be easy, but the reward is great!

Discussion Questions

1. What would it look like to put God in your "driver's seat"? How can you begin today to allow Him to lead?

2. Do you have a Jeremiah in your life – someone who challenges you when you are on the wrong path? If not, what steps can you take to start building this type of relationship with another believer? How can you openly and actively seek the counsel of other believers for input and wisdom?

3. Do you have a "Top 10" list of people in your life who are not saved? Are you brokenhearted about those on your list? How should your actions reflect that?

WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY

JEREMIAH 5-9 (APR 11-15)

Read Jeremiah 9:23-24.

What does it mean to boast?

What three things does the Lord tell us NOT to boast about? Why?

What one thing does the Lord tell men to boast about? What character traits of God are listed in verse 24?

In what do you typically boast? Why does it seem easier to boast in the things of verse 23?

Read Philippians 3:8-9.

What did Paul say he considered "rubbish"?

Activity: Have each member of your family make a list of things that you consider accomplishments or great things in your life. Talk about each thing listed and discuss how you can give God the glory in those things. Is knowing God more important to you than having fame, attention, or stuff in this world? What can you do to know God better and make Him your number one priority?
