Central Truth
With forgiveness and love, God can clean anyone with anything at anytime.
For all of us have become like one who is unclean,
And all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment;
And all of us wither like a leaf,
And our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
(Isaiah 64:6)
1
Oh that you would rend the heavens and come down,
that the mountains might quake at your presence—

64:2
Ch 64:1 in Hebrew
as when fire kindles brushwood
and the fire causes water to boil—
to make your name known to your adversaries,
and that the nations might tremble at your presence!
3
When you did awesome things that we did not look for,
you came down, the mountains quaked at your presence.
4
From of old no one has heard
or perceived by the ear,
no eye has seen a God besides you,
who acts for those who wait for him.
5
You meet him who joyfully works righteousness,
those who remember you in your ways.
Behold, you were angry, and we sinned;
in our sins we have been a long time, and shall we be saved?
2
64:5
Or in your ways is continuance, that we might be saved
6
We have all become like one who is unclean,
and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment.
We all fade like a leaf,
and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
7
There is no one who calls upon your name,
who rouses himself to take hold of you;
for you have hidden your face from us,
and have made us melt in
3
64:7
Masoretic Text; Septuagint, Syriac, Targum have delivered us into
the hand of our iniquities.
8
But now, O LORD, you are our Father;
we are the clay, and you are our potter;
we are all the work of your hand.
9
Be not so terribly angry, O LORD,
and remember not iniquity forever.
Behold, please look, we are all your people.
10
Your holy cities have become a wilderness;
Zion has become a wilderness,
Jerusalem a desolation.
11
Our holy and beautiful

64:11
Or holy and glorious
house,
where our fathers praised you,
has been burned by fire,
and all our pleasant places have become ruins.
12
Will you restrain yourself at these things, O LORD?
Will you keep silent, and afflict us so terribly?
I wish that I could tell you that my life was fantastic right before accepting Christ into my life. Three years ago, my life was far from fantastic. I've struggled with perfectionism my entire life. Growing up, my room was never clean enough. I recall cleaning my room faithfully. It was exhausting trying to keep everything spotless.
When I got to college, my hectic schedule resulted in me cleaning less and less. Eventually, I came to the conclusion that there was nothing more I could do to keep up with my perfectionist lifestyle. It was disheartening. God used that time thereafter to tell me that there was more to life than working to attain perfection here on earth.
One of the first Bible verses to really grab my attention was Romans 3:23, "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." It was amazing how such a simple verse told me everything I needed to know about why my perfectionist lifestyle was unattainable and flawed. The very best I could do on my own was really only a filthy garment before our Holy God. The realization that I am a sinner and not able to be perfect on my own terms weighed heavily on my heart. The discovery of Christ and trusting in Him was truly a burden lifted (Matthew 11:28-30).
As my walk with Christ continues, my understanding of who He truly is and His love for me grows. It grows because there is life in Christ (John 14:6). Every day, through prayer and reading God's Word, I remember that God loves me and offers forgiveness for all my sins, all of the time. While righteous deeds are good, righteous deeds alone are not enough. To become washed of our sins (clean), we require the love and forgiveness of Christ.
1. Is there a struggle or sin in your life that remains dirty?
2. What in your life are you not allowing God to clean? Why not?
3. What will you ask God's forgiveness for today?
WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY
ISAIAH 61-65 (MAR 28-APR 1)
Read Isaiah 61:1-3.
Who is this passage about? Go read Luke 4:18-21. How great is that!
What did Jesus come to do?
Activity: Family Relay
Needed Items: hat, cup of vegetable oil, and a sweat suit.
(The hat represents a crown of gladness; the cup of vegetable oil, oil of gladness; the sweat suit, garment of praise.) Put on the hat and the sweat suit, and carry the oil as you run to and around a tree in your front yard. Run back and have the next family members in order put on the hat and sweat suit and carry the oil as they run around the tree and back. Repeat until everyone has run. Time yourselves and see how quickly you can do it.
After the activity: Discuss how God's grace is a crown of beauty, forgiveness is an oil of gladness, and salvation is a garment of praise.
