Central Truth
Whenever we respond to someone or something, we are fueled by a source. Our words are inspired by either emptiness (i.e., the east wind) or the Word of God and His truths.
"Does a wise man answer with blustery knowledge, or fill his belly with the east wind? Does he argue with useless talk, with words that have no value in them?" (Job 15:2-3)
1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said:

“Should a wise man answer with windy knowledge,
and fill his belly with the east wind?

Should he argue in unprofitable talk,
or in words with which he can do no good?

But you are doing away with the fear of God

Or he who is born of a woman, that he can be righteous?

and the heavens are not pure in his sight;

how much less one who is abominable and corrupt,
a man who drinks injustice like water!

I will show you; hear me,
and what I have seen I will declare

without hiding it from their fathers,

to whom alone the land was given,
and no stranger passed among them).

The wicked man writhes in pain all his days,
through all the years that are laid up for the ruthless.

Dreadful sounds are in his ears;
in prosperity the destroyer will come upon him.

He does not believe that he will return out of darkness,
and he is marked for the sword.

He wanders abroad for bread, saying, ‘Where is it?’
He knows that a day of darkness is ready at his hand;

distress and anguish terrify him;
they prevail against him, like a king ready for battle.

Because he has stretched out his hand against God
and defies the Almighty,

running stubbornly against him
with a thickly bossed shield;

because he has covered his face with his fat
and gathered fat upon his waist

and has lived in desolate cities,
in houses that none should inhabit,
which were ready to become heaps of ruins;

he will not be rich, and his wealth will not endure,
nor will his possessions spread over the earth;

Let him not trust in emptiness, deceiving himself,
for emptiness will be his payment.

He will shake off his unripe grape like the vine,
and cast off his blossom like the olive tree.

For the company of the godless is barren,
and fire consumes the tents of bribery.

They conceive trouble and give birth to evil,
and their womb prepares deceit.”
Job 15 begins the second round of speeches from Job's friends. In his first speech, Eliphaz emphasized God's moral perfection. (4:1-5:27) Because the first round of talks did not bring about the desired result, Eliphaz uses even stronger words in his second speech to Job. This time, Eliphaz alleges that Job is irreverent (15:2-6), arrogant (15:7-16), and will suffer the fate of the wicked (15:17-35). Basically, Eliphaz told Job that he was being punished because he was wicked. Eliphaz was convinced that Job was a hardened sinner defying God.
While this is not necessarily the main part of his speech, Eliphaz challenges the value of Job's words. (15:2-3) He asks Job if the wise man speaks blustery language, inspired by a belly full of the east wind. In referring to the east wind, Eliphaz is essentially saying that the unwise, wicked man is full of hot air, arguing with useless words, as opposed to words that actually carry value in them. The question is rhetorical because we all know that the wise man argues with words of value, not empty words.
I constantly find myself providing my own personal opinion on issues, regardless of whether they carry value or not. The greatest example of speaking words of value is seen in the life of Jesus. When tempted by Satan, Jesus repeatedly responded to Satan's temptations with references to Scripture. (Matthew 4:1-10) Jesus' words carry great value in them and provide an example of how we are to respond to temptations and provide counsel.
The challenge is that our words must both carry value and come from a heart of love and compassion. Paul writes, "Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you should answer everyone." (Colossians 4:6) May our words carry great value in them, be full of grace, informed by God's Word, and not inspired by a "belly [filled] with the east wind."
