Central Truth

Our daily desire for God should be as if we are wandering in the desert desperate for water. He alone quenches the soul and satisfies the flesh.

Key Verse | Psalm 63:1

O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you;
my soul thirsts for you;
my flesh faints for you,
as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
(Psalm 63:1)

Psalm 63

My Soul Thirsts for You

A Psalm of David, when he was in the wilderness of Judah.

O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you;
    my soul thirsts for you;
my flesh faints for you,
    as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary,
    beholding your power and glory.
Because your steadfast love is better than life,
    my lips will praise you.
So I will bless you as long as I live;
    in your name I will lift up my hands.

My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food,
    and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips,
when I remember you upon my bed,
    and meditate on you in the watches of the night;
for you have been my help,
    and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy.
My soul clings to you;
    your right hand upholds me.

But those who seek to destroy my life
    shall go down into the depths of the earth;
10  they shall be given over to the power of the sword;
    they shall be a portion for jackals.
11  But the king shall rejoice in God;
    all who swear by him shall exult,
    for the mouths of liars will be stopped.

Dive Deeper | Psalm 63

Soon to be king, David fled in fear to the wilderness of Judah where he was alone. The first verse of the psalm tells us what our soul's condition must be each day that we may have life. You see, until 2012, I was not only drinking sewage water, I was drinking it heavily. I was satisfying my flesh with all the false treasures of this world, believing that they were giving me life. In reality, I was traveling farther and deeper into the desert with the wrong canteen.

The Lord, being gracious and merciful, showed me what I was drinking and saved me. He showed me the well I should be drinking from; the well that is not only life-giving, but the one that never runs out. When He showed this to me, my life changed. My soul and my flesh from that point were revived, and I began immediately to see the goodness of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

We see the praise and worship from David in this psalm. Treasuring God's unconditional love more than life itself (verse 3), David will praise the Lord continually. Throughout this psalm, I am constantly reminded that I must seek after the Lord with intention, effort, purpose, and sincerity. I must remember that each day when I wake up. I pray to the Lord to give my soul and flesh the hunger and desire to know Him, to see how good He is, and to pursue Him in a world that can feel like a desert.

Over these last four-and-a-half years, I have seen days and periods when I have not earnestly desired everything that God gives and have suffered through where that takes me. But the invitation to satisfy that thirst and longing with God is free. Isaiah 55:1 says: “Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price." We can only be satisfied and fulfilled with God; seek Him earnestly, and He promises to fill you.
