Big Idea

We can trust God when we don't know how things will turn out.

Key Verse | Genesis 18:14

"Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son."

Genesis 18

And the LORD appeared to him by the oaks 1 18:1 Or terebinths of Mamre, as he sat at the door of his tent in the heat of the day. He lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing in front of him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the earth and said, “O Lord, 2 18:3 Or My lord if I have found favor in your sight, do not pass by your servant. Let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree, while I bring a morsel of bread, that you may refresh yourselves, and after that you may pass on—since you have come to your servant.” So they said, “Do as you have said.” And Abraham went quickly into the tent to Sarah and said, “Quick! Three seahs 3 18:6 A seah was about 7 quarts or 7.3 liters of fine flour! Knead it, and make cakes.” And Abraham ran to the herd and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to a young man, who prepared it quickly. Then he took curds and milk and the calf that he had prepared, and set it before them. And he stood by them under the tree while they ate.

They said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” And he said, “She is in the tent.” 10 The LORD said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife shall have a son.” And Sarah was listening at the tent door behind him. 11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in years. The way of women had ceased to be with Sarah. 12 So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, “After I am worn out, and my lord is old, shall I have pleasure?” 13 The LORD said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?’ 14 Is anything too hard 4 18:14 Or wonderful for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son.” 15 But Sarah denied it, 5 18:15 Or acted falsely saying, “I did not laugh,” for she was afraid. He said, “No, but you did laugh.”

16 Then the men set out from there, and they looked down toward Sodom. And Abraham went with them to set them on their way. 17 The LORD said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do, 18 seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? 19 For I have chosen 6 18:19 Hebrew known him, that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing righteousness and justice, so that the LORD may bring to Abraham what he has promised him.” 20 Then the LORD said, “Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great and their sin is very grave, 21 I will go down to see whether they have done altogether 7 18:21 Or they deserve destruction; Hebrew they have made a complete end according to the outcry that has come to me. And if not, I will know.”

Abraham Intercedes for Sodom

22 So the men turned from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the LORD. 23 Then Abraham drew near and said, “Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? 24 Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city. Will you then sweep away the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous who are in it? 25 Far be it from you to do such a thing, to put the righteous to death with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from you! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?” 26 And the LORD said, “If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”

27 Abraham answered and said, “Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes. 28 Suppose five of the fifty righteous are lacking. Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five?” And he said, “I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.” 29 Again he spoke to him and said, “Suppose forty are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of forty I will not do it.” 30 Then he said, “Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak. Suppose thirty are found there.” He answered, “I will not do it, if I find thirty there.” 31 He said, “Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord. Suppose twenty are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of twenty I will not destroy it.” 32 Then he said, “Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak again but this once. Suppose ten are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of ten I will not destroy it.” 33 And the LORD went his way, when he had finished speaking to Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.

Dive Deeper | Genesis 18

We see God's covenant, its affirmation with Abraham, and its confirmation with Sarah even when they were old and had passed the age of childbearing. The Merriam-Webster dictionary tells us that a covenant is a formal, solemn, and binding agreement.

I see many clients who deal with anxiety, which is rooted in the uncertainties of everyday life. Some have hope, while others face similar uncertainties without it, which leads to white-knuckling through life.

Knowing and trusting in God brings us hope. His solid track record makes Him trustworthy even when things seem impossible. My life's heartbreaking trials, like domestic violence, separation, divorce, and a custody battle were opportunities to trust God against all odds (2 Corinthians 1:8-11). He proved that nothing was too hard for Him (Jeremiah 32:27). He kept His promises through standing by me like a husband (Isaiah 54:5), as a father to my fatherless daughter (Psalm 68:5), and as a restorer of time and other things lost (Joel 2:25). This began a journey to ask for the impossible and trust that He would do it so that I could trust Him more each day.

When we find strength in God's promises, we move from surviving to thriving. As we put more of our trust in the Lord, we learn that He makes promises knowing some things are impossible for us and shows us how our faith can grow when we see Him keep His word. (Numbers 23:19; Hebrews 6:17-18) He tells us to ask so that He can show us great and mighty things (Jeremiah 33:3).

Remaining steadfast while prayers are answered "at the appointed time," or asking ourselves, "Is anything too hard for the LORD?" (Genesis 18:14), helps our unbelief (Mark 9:24). In Watermark's recovery ministry re:generation, steps 1, 2, and 3 are Admit, Believe, and Trust. These steps show us our need for God's grace because we were not meant to, and therefore cannot, live without God. Like the sun behind the clouds of uncertainties, God is always there, and we can say, "Fear is on every side, I trust in You, You are my God."

This month's memory verse

We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.

– John 1:45b

GM Jackie! Wow. Thank you for sharing your story. What a wonderful gift you are to our international students and to so many others. You and Abraham have the gift of hospitality! So much good stuff in your devo- -Knowing and trusting in God brings us hope. It seems that hope is the key. In Prodigal, it’s the lead-off lesson in the 20-week study. Your witness links me to Isaiah 26:3. -Impossible promises. 7487 of them. In the first few weeks after Amy, (Proverbs 31), and I jumped in, we began to hear about impossible things happening; re:gen, re engage, Prodigal and many others. https://www.dailycommercial.com/story/lifestyle/columns/2017/07/08/reflections-how-many-promises-there-are-in-bible/20305079007/ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How well do I know God? 2012- Not very well. My view was that relationships were transactional. 2023- In some other world. How did I get there? Hardship and prayer, (James 1:2-4, Isaiah 30:20-21, Romans 5:3-5).

Hardship brought me to my knees so that I would be so desperate that I would completely surrender. Having been taught some basic truths about prayer I turned to it like I was dying of thirst. Several takeaways from these passages- -Abraham knew God well enough to recognize Him when he saw Him. -He knew how to serve Him and others. -Give the gift of hospitality to all. -He knows that NOTHING is too hard for the LORD. -He believes the promises, regardless of how outrageous they may seem. -Knowing what he knows of God he seeks to know even more. -He shows his humble heart. -He seeks God’s mercy for others. -He is intensely persistent in his intercessions. Abraham sees that God deeply desires a relationship with him that is loving and caring. Abraham, like me, needs only to respond and seek unity with Him, (John 14:20).

Occasionally I am asked, “What do you pray for the most?” My answer is always the same; my unsaved children. “Father, I pray that Tori and Thomas come to a saving and surrendered faith. WHAT EVER IT TAKES.” "It is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to pray effectively for lost souls if one is not convinced that lostness will ultimately result in literal, eternal punishment." Jackie, this is packed with truth bombs! Very encouraging for you to share your struggles paired with scripture to defeat every battle. My family has had our share of struggles, including mental health. Bless you for carrying God’s word and spirit into that arena! “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed. His compassions never fail. They are new every morning!” Lamentations 3:22,23. Thank you so much for this devotional and for leading by example. Hope a terrific weekend everyone.

18:1, 2, 13 The Lord appeared as 3 strangers, then suddenly is speaking as the Lord. Does Abraham know it's God? Also, pre-incarnate Jesus? Maybe, maybe not. 18:12, 15 Sarah laughed because she doubted God could fulfill His promise. She was looking at the human side of things rather than at God's character. To make things worse, she lies about it. It's so easy to put my trust in what I can see rather than what God has shown me to be true. This reminds me of Noah getting drunk after the flood is over. How quickly I forget God's faithfulness when it's in the past and I can't see Him in the present. My heart is so fickle and prone to wander. 18:16-33 Intercessory prayer works. God changes what and how He proceeds because of Abraham's requests. And Abraham gives me a guide on how to do this - appealing to God's unchanging character. "God, you are just! In your justice, do not wipe out the righteous for the sins committed by those who are evil!" And God listens to his plea. How often do I appeal to God's character when making a request? Or to His desire for all to come to repentance, or to the glory He would get by the fulfillment of the request? This is such a great passage that should shape how I pray.

Thank you, Jackie. Loved your Devo. “Hope” is what comes to mind for me as I ponder everything in the reading today. In your words, “Knowing and trusting in God brings us hope. His solid track record makes Him trustworthy even when things seem impossible.” My life could easily be tossed to and fro by anxiety and the fear of unknowns and ultimate lack of control with outcomes….BUT God in his mercy reminds me to trust Him and follow Him for a purposeful and hope-filled life. (Proverbs 3:5-6, Matthew 4:19) The gifts that cause the most joy in my life (that require the utmost amount of trust in God) are my two boys (…..and twins due in May 😬😃🙌🏻). Their health, safety, future, salvation, etc is 💯% on God’s watch and in His control. In order to avoid any bit of anxiety around their safety or their unknown future I must focus on the gift of each day and steward their sweet little lives to THE Savior that’s knocking on their heart’s door (Revelation 3:20). So I will do that. When I do that, I have hope. When I do that, I have less anxiety.

Thank you, Jackie. What a blessing when a mental health NP embodies the peace that can come to the anxiety-riddled hearts of those who trust in the Prince of Peace! In the previous chapter, we saw that Abraham laughed at the Lord's prophecy that Sarah would bear him a son. Today we watched Sarah laugh, then deny it. Their laughter was "Yeah right!" unbelief, which was understandable since they didn't have the story of the miracle baby Isaac in Genesis 17 and 18 like we do. So when God instructs them to name the forthcoming baby "Laughter," He's going to remind them that He is the God of the impossible every time they use his name. Dr. Constable tells us the Hebrew word translated "impossible" means, “to be wonderful, to be extraordinary, to be surpassing, to be amazing.”

Re: Gen 18:1 According to Jewish tradition, this chapter opens three days after Abraham’s circumcision. While Rabbinic Judaism insists Abraham was having a vision of G-d before being interrupted by the appearance of three angels (Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael) disguised as men, Messianic Judaism (Jews who believe Jesus to be the Messiah) and gentile Christianity generally assert Abraham’s encounter with the three guests was a Christophany (an Old Testament appearance of the pre-incarnate Christ), in the form of the Angel of the LORD (מַלְאַךְ יהוה), accompanied by two angels. “This explains why it is written that the LORD (יהוה) tarried with Abraham after the other two angels left for Sodom.” — John Parsons For more details, see: https://hebrew4christians.com/Scripture/Parashah/Summaries/Vayera/Visitors/visitors.html Re: Gen 18:12 Gen 18:12 (NASB) >>>Sarah laughed<<< to herself, saying, “After I have become old, shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?” The same Hebrew word translated "laughed" here in v12 is translated "mocked" in Gen 21:9 (NASB). Q: “Didn’t Abraham ‘laugh’ at the same news in Gen 17:17? Why was Abraham’s laughter not also called into question by the L-RD?” A: From HEBREW FOR CHRISTIANS: “The [Jewish] sages note that when Abraham first heard the news about an heir ‘from his own loins,’ he laughed >>>joyfully,<<< but Sarah later laughed >>>derisively<<<....” https://hebrew4christians.com/Scripture/Parashah/Summaries/Vayera/Visitors/visitors.html “Jewish tradition maintains that Abraham laughed in joy at the prospect of becoming a father, whereas Sarah (initially) shook her head in disbelief. Sarah underwent [Heb] teshuvah [Eng = repentance; “to turn back”], however, even before her conception (see Heb. 11:11), and after the miraculous birth of her son exclaimed in heartfelt joy: ‘God has made laughter (צְחק) for me; everyone who hears will laugh for me (יִצְחַק־לִי)’ (Gen. 21:6).“ https://hebrew4christians.com/Scripture/Parashah/Summaries/Vayera/Wordplay/wordplay.html Gen 18:12 is yet another link in a chain of examples throughout scripture of the far off, approaching Messiah (Num 24:17a) and His progenitors being met with derision, mockery, and unbelief.

Earlier in Genesis there was a singular Oak of Mamre. Now with the passage of time we have 'the Oaks of Mamre'. It makes it clear that both Abraham and Sarah were way past the age of ability of Childbirth but God would bless every family on earth through them and nothing is impossible with God. If there is an "Occam's razor in theology: (physics the most simple explanation is probably best it might be what glorifies God most is probably best _ In fact Abraham will have 6 more sons after Sarah dies with his new wife Ketruah to become 'father of nations'. not just one nation.

1. I ask God to be at work in my life everyday. Some of my requests have included God’s help with daily scheduling, God’s help with career advancement, and God’s help with grocery shopping to prevent starving. 2. One prayer I pray is for God’s strength as Isaiah 41:10 promises. 3. I would like God to finish the road construction in my neighborhood. It started at the beginning of Summer 2022 on a small part of my street and now in January 2023, goes the full length of my street and neighboring streets too.
