Central Truth

In a world filled with injustice, violence, and rebellion, God wants His people to know that the reckoning of evil is certain and firmly in His hands.

Key Verse | Revelation 6:12-13

When he opened the sixth seal, I looked, and behold, there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black as sackcloth, the full moon became like blood, and the stars of the sky fell to the earth as the fig tree sheds it winter fruit when shaken by a gale.

Revelation 6

The Seven Seals

Now I watched when the Lamb opened one of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures say with a voice like thunder, “Come!” And I looked, and behold, a white horse! And its rider had a bow, and a crown was given to him, and he came out conquering, and to conquer.

When he opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, “Come!” And out came another horse, bright red. Its rider was permitted to take peace from the earth, so that people should slay one another, and he was given a great sword.

When he opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come!” And I looked, and behold, a black horse! And its rider had a pair of scales in his hand. And I heard what seemed to be a voice in the midst of the four living creatures, saying, “A quart 1 6:6 Greek choinix, a dry measure equal to about a quart of wheat for a denarius, 2 6:6 A denarius was a day's wage for a laborer and three quarts of barley for a denarius, and do not harm the oil and wine!”

When he opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, “Come!” And I looked, and behold, a pale horse! And its rider's name was Death, and Hades followed him. And they were given authority over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword and with famine and with pestilence and by wild beasts of the earth.

When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the witness they had borne. 10 They cried out with a loud voice, “O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you will judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” 11 Then they were each given a white robe and told to rest a little longer, until the number of their fellow servants and their brothers 3 6:11 Or brothers and sisters. In New Testament usage, depending on the context, the plural Greek word adelphoi (translated brothers) may refer either to brothers or to brothers and sisters should be complete, who were to be killed as they themselves had been.

12 When he opened the sixth seal, I looked, and behold, there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black as sackcloth, the full moon became like blood, 13 and the stars of the sky fell to the earth as the fig tree sheds its winter fruit when shaken by a gale. 14 The sky vanished like a scroll that is being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place. 15 Then the kings of the earth and the great ones and the generals and the rich and the powerful, and everyone, slave 4 6:15 For the contextual rendering of the Greek word doulos, see Preface and free, hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains, 16 calling to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who is seated on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb, 17 for the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?”

Dive Deeper | Revelation 6

John’s vision continues with Jesus finally executing judgment upon the earth. With each seal broken, His judgment intensifies. Here's a summary of the first six seals:

First – This man on a white horse is believed to be the Antichrist who pretends to fight for righteousness but ultimately brings destruction. John 10:10 quotes Jesus: "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came so that they may have life and have it abundantly."

Second – Peace is removed from the earth, resulting in bloodshed and war.

Third – Famine ravages the land. A person's daily wage will scarcely cover food to eat.

Fourth – Death is given authority to take a quarter of the earth's population. Potentially 1.5 billion are killed worldwide in these first four judgments.

Fifth – The martyrs in heaven are crying out for vengeance against their murderers on earth. These anguished martyrs were recently haters of God left on earth to face God's wrath. But in judgment they believe the word of God and hold to His testimony. What is this testimony they give their life for? 1 John 5:11-12 reads: "God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life."

Sixth – A de-creation of the entire earth, directed by God Himself, so dreadful that all people, including kings, the wealthy, and the brilliant, recognize their powerlessness to save themselves. Their worldly strength is useless, yet they refuse to humble themselves, repent, and turn to the Lamb who can save them.

Revelation 6 gives me confidence when I'm tempted to believe evil has won in this world. It's a reminder that God isn't finished, just painfully patient; and history is in His hands. His ultimate judgment will repay a hundredfold any evil committed by man. But in the darkness, there shines an unexpected glimmer of grace. In judgment, God still reaches down and saves.

Lord, thank you for allowing me to believe through your glory and goodness, instead of facing your judgment to come. Thank you for delivering me from this holy and terrifying wrath, which I deserve, by personally bearing all my sins on the cross. Amen.

Discussion Questions

1. Do you ignore thinking or talking about the day that wrath will come? If so, is it because you believe it's impossible, or have you given up believing God will judge?

2. Are you more surprised by God's judgment, or like me, God's mercy?

3. It frightens me when I realize many I love could remain on earth to experience this famine, war and death. If I don't make it a priority to share the testimony I have (1 John 5:11-12), they can't believe and be rescued. How about you?
