Central Truth

Contentment, truth, and abundant life are found in Christ alone—what are we waiting for?!

Key Verse | 1 Timothy 6:12

Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

1 Timothy 6

Let all who are under a yoke as bondservants 1 6:1 For the contextual rendering of the Greek word doulos, see Preface regard their own masters as worthy of all honor, so that the name of God and the teaching may not be reviled. Those who have believing masters must not be disrespectful on the ground that they are brothers; rather they must serve all the better since those who benefit by their good service are believers and beloved.

False Teachers and True Contentment

Teach and urge these things. If anyone teaches a different doctrine and does not agree with the sound 2 6:3 Or healthy words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that accords with godliness, he is puffed up with conceit and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy craving for controversy and for quarrels about words, which produce envy, dissension, slander, evil suspicions, and constant friction among people who are depraved in mind and deprived of the truth, imagining that godliness is a means of gain. But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and 3 6:7 Greek for; some manuscripts insert [it is] certain [that] we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.

Fight the Good Fight of Faith

11 But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 13 I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before 4 6:13 Or in the time of Pontius Pilate made the good confession, 14 to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 which he will display at the proper time—he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.

17 As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. 18 They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, 19 thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.

20 O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you. Avoid the irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called “knowledge,” 21 for by professing it some have swerved from the faith.

Grace be with you. 5 6:21 The Greek for you is plural

Dive Deeper | 1 Timothy 6

Paul, writing to his companion and child in the faith, Timothy, sets up a strong portrait of a depraved, misguided teacher of false doctrine. Under the twisted truths of this instructor, we see the traps of pride, conceit, and misunderstanding; an improper desire for material wealth; and godliness as a means of personal gain. Depraved in mind and in truth, the false teacher allows these snares to fuel a self-serving attitude and reckless behavior.

Contrast this to Paul's depiction of Timothy, whom Paul identifies as a man of God and spurs him to be motivated by Christ-like fruit of righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, and gentleness. In 1 Timothy 6:12, Paul charges Timothy (and us!) to "take hold" of eternal life. What an exciting truth and humbling offer! He also implores Timothy to "fight" the good fight of the faith, using the Greek word for "struggle" from which we derive the word agonize, suggesting that it will not come easy to our wandering hearts.

We are always chasing something; our hearts are in a daily pursuit. Our enemy is a master of lies, and our culture a "false teacher" that blurs the lines with variations of truth. Paul encourages us to embrace truth and keep the commandment to flee these things and pursue Christ, remembering who He is—sovereign, eternal, and honorable King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

Christ openhandedly gives us Himself to pursue in place of the rubbish we so tirelessly run after. He reminds us that God gives life to all things (1 Timothy 6:13) and richly provides us with everything to enjoy (1 Timothy 6:17). Instead of pursuing "senseless and harmful desires" that plunge us into ruin and destruction, share in the freedom of Christ's readily available gift of salvation. Romans 6:23 assures us that although "the wages of sin is death," the "free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." Let us delight in what is truly life-giving!

Discussion Questions

1. What "babble and contradictions" (1 Timothy 6:20) in our culture are your stumbling blocks to finding contentment in Christ?

2. When you find yourself motivated by the trappings of this world, what turns your affections toward Christ? How can you grow your heart in these things?

3. What is hindering you from clinging fully to Jesus and aggressively "taking hold" of the abundant life that He alone gives?
