Central Truth

Just as Jesus took common fishermen and transformed them into fishers of men, He will do the same with us. He calls us to follow Him, taking the wisdom and talents He has given us, and showing us how to use them for His glory.

Key Verse | Matthew 4:19

And he said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men."

Matthew 4

The Temptation of Jesus

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written,

‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,

‘He will command his angels concerning you,’

and

‘On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”

Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written,

‘You shall worship the Lord your God
and him only shall you serve.’”

11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.

Jesus Begins His Ministry

12 Now when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee. 13 And leaving Nazareth he went and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14 so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:

15  “The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—
16  the people dwelling in darkness
    have seen a great light,
and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death,
on them a light has dawned.”

17 From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” 1 4:17 Or the kingdom of heaven has come near

Jesus Calls the First Disciples

18 While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19 And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 2 4:19 The Greek word anthropoi refers here to both men and women 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed him. 21 And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. 22 Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

Jesus Ministers to Great Crowds

23 And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people. 24 So his fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and pains, those oppressed by demons, those having seizures, and paralytics, and he healed them. 25 And great crowds followed him from Galilee and the Decapolis, and from Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.

Dive Deeper | Matthew 4

What stands out to me in Matthew 4 is that Simon, Andrew, James, and John immediately chose to leave everything and follow Jesus. I wish I could say that I would do the same. But to be honest, I can think of many different times in my life when I was sitting in church, listening to the sermon, and knew I was not following Jesus immediately. I would feel convicted; but as soon as the sermon ended, I went back to my sinful ways of finding my identity in my looks or in relationships, but not in Jesus. I played this game for years until I finally came to the end of myself.

Through re:generation and my community group, the Lord was once again showing me that I was not leaving my sinful habits and following Jesus, like we see the fishermen so faithfully do (Matthew 4:20, 22).

I admire their obedience and love for the Lord to trust that His ways are better than what the world offers us. I now try to look at each day as an opportunity to wake up and "immediately" follow Jesus. Or to deny myself, pick up my cross, and follow Jesus (Luke 9:23). Some days are harder than others, but that's why I'm so thankful we serve a God whose mercies are new each morning (Lamentations 3:22-23).

Like we see the fishermen choose to leave everything and follow Jesus, we have that choice every day, and sometimes multiple times throughout our day. The more we get to know this loving, merciful Jesus, the more we will trust Him and want to drop everything, leave our sinful ways, and follow Him through the ups and downs in life.

Just as Jesus took common fishermen and transformed them into fishers of men (Matthew 4:19), He will do the same with us. He calls us to follow Him, taking the wisdom and talents He has given us, and showing us how to use them for His glory.

Discussion Questions

1. What sin in your life are you not repenting from? What is God calling you to immediately leave or surrender to follow Him? What does it look like for you to be obedient to God today?

2. What talents has God given you that you can use for His glory?

3. What "half truths" have you been believing that you need to confess to community and replace with God's truth?

4. What "weak" areas of your life does the devil like to pounce on? What Scriptures are you working on memorizing for when he does pounce?
