Central Truth

God doesn't just want you to know about Him, He wants you to know Him! The God of the universe is madly in love with you and desires a relationship with you.

Key Verse | Matthew 3:7-8

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruit in keeping with repentance."

Matthew 3

John the Baptist Prepares the Way

In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” 1 3:2 Or the kingdom of heaven has come near For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said,

“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
‘Prepare 2 3:3 Or crying: Prepare in the wilderness the way of the Lord;
    make his paths straight.’”

Now John wore a garment of camel's hair and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan were going out to him, and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham. 10 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

11 I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”

The Baptism of Jesus

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. 14 John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” 15 But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. 16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, 3 3:16 Some manuscripts omit to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; 17 and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, 4 3:17 Or my Son, my (or the) Beloved with whom I am well pleased.”

Dive Deeper | Matthew 3

Have you ever heard the saying, "They missed heaven by only 18 inches"? If you measure the distance from your head to your heart, you will see there are only 18 inches between the two. What they are saying is that it's one thing to know about God but a totally different thing to know God.

John the Baptist was Jesus' cousin, and his ministry was to pave the way for Jesus. John's main message was simply, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." (Matthew 3:2) First, what does it meant to repent? Repent is a verb that often includes a feeling of remorse about something. But it doesn't stop there, because it is an action verb. Repent also means to change one's mind. It requires you to turn from something.

I would say I accepted Christ at the age of 8. The reality is, I believed in God and knew I didn't want to go to hell. Knowing about God and even believing in Him are not the end of the story (James 2:19). Fast-forward to high school, and with all the knowledge of God, I quickly became a Pharisee—quick to judge and condemn all those around me doing what I knew God said not to. College came, and I soon became the condemned—living in shame because I was living in sin. Promiscuity, lust, and an eating disorder were my chains. "Repent? What for?" I asked myself. What I knew about God didn't match the truth of who God really is.

My next bad decision left me totally broken. Then I came to truly know my Lord and Savior (Psalm 51:17). Spending time with the Lord daily by reading His Word and going to Him in prayer changed me—no longer did I simply have head knowledge of Him, but my heart fell in love with Him. With my broken and contrite heart came true repentance: I was a new creation in Christ with a life totally transformed by the renewing of my mind (2 Corinthians 5:17; Romans 12:2). John the Baptist's message to repent can be the difference of 18 inches. Are you willing to risk heaven on that?

2. Will there be 18 inches keeping you from spending eternity in paradise with Christ?

3. What do you need to repent and turn from today? Whom will you tell?
