Central Truth
Adam's trespass against God led to our judgment and condemnation, but Jesus' obedience allows us to experience God's grace, His righteousness, and His life! What once was a deadly inheritance is now the greatest exchange!
One mistake. One mishap. One act of disobedience. That’s all it took. An innocent Adam in good standing with God, now completely separated from perfection and doomed to a life of isolation, hardship, and death. This is our inheritance.
Wait. What?
“I’ll pass.”
Well, that’s what I would like to say; however, the inheritance is unwillingly mine. It’s yours. It’s all of humanity’s. We cannot change it, and we cannot, in our efforts, do anything about it. When Adam questioned God’s goodness and doubted by eating the forbidden fruit, he immediately died spiritually, his relationship with God was broken, and his body began to grow old and die. 1 Corinthians 15:22 says, “[I]n Adam all die.” This is the inheritance, the legacy, Adam gave us. Because of him, not only can our actions be sinful, but our very nature is hopeless. We are incapable of doing or choosing what is acceptable to God, apart from His divine grace.
Yep, I agree, very weighty, but meant to be taken seriously, as well as deepen our joy as we consider the second part of Romans 5:18. One Savior. One sacrifice. One way of reconciliation with God. That’s what it took! A sinless representative, fully human and fully God, in complete love with His creation, choosing to be obedient on our behalf. This can now be our inheritance! Whether you're a murderer or materialist, an adulterer or a liar, a prideful person or a doubter—all human beings, whatever you have done, may be made right with God! Not by our own works (Ephesians 2:8-9), but solely on the basis of Christ’s righteous act! Not because of anything you have done, but because of Christ’s obedience. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” We are given a new nature! As believers, we are justified, we are made right with God, and we are given life! An eternal life with God, filled with purpose, joy, and abundantly more than what one would expect or anticipate!
Wait. What?!
This month's memory verse
3 For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.”
1. As a believer, what does it mean to you to be justified and given life with Christ? How does this impact you today?
2. In what way are you still choosing to live in captivity to sin and death, knowing (based on Romans 5:18), that God sees you as righteous? I encourage you to reach out to a trusted believer about this who can encourage you today!
3. We are given a new heart and a new nature as believers in Christ. How should this affect how we treat others who do not know God and stand condemned as it says in Romans 5:18?
