Central Truth

As you go out for the sake of the Name, let your authority be the truth, Jesus Christ Himself!

Key Verse | 3 John 11

Beloved, do not imitate evil but imitate good. Whoever does good is from God; whoever does evil has not seen God.

3 John 1–15

Greeting

The elder to the beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth.

Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul. For I rejoiced greatly when the brothers 1 1:3 Or brothers and sisters. In New Testament usage, depending on the context, the plural Greek word adelphoi (translated brothers) may refer either to brothers or to brothers and sisters; also verses 5, 10 came and testified to your truth, as indeed you are walking in the truth. I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.

Support and Opposition

Beloved, it is a faithful thing you do in all your efforts for these brothers, strangers as they are, who testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on their journey in a manner worthy of God. For they have gone out for the sake of the name, accepting nothing from the Gentiles. Therefore we ought to support people like these, that we may be fellow workers for the truth.

I have written something to the church, but Diotrephes, who likes to put himself first, does not acknowledge our authority. 10 So if I come, I will bring up what he is doing, talking wicked nonsense against us. And not content with that, he refuses to welcome the brothers, and also stops those who want to and puts them out of the church.

11 Beloved, do not imitate evil but imitate good. Whoever does good is from God; whoever does evil has not seen God. 12 Demetrius has received a good testimony from everyone, and from the truth itself. We also add our testimony, and you know that our testimony is true.

Final Greetings

13 I had much to write to you, but I would rather not write with pen and ink. 14 I hope to see you soon, and we will talk face to face.

15 Peace be to you. The friends greet you. Greet the friends, each by name.

Dive Deeper | 3 John 1–15

As a result of John's absence, Diotrephes, who liked to put himself first, did not acknowledge the authority of the church's leaders (3 John 9-10). I have a feeling his actions were on the sly, not in front of others in the church. Gaius seemed to be unaware of the issue.

There came a point in my marriage when I decided I would stop listening to and caring about my husband. I never told him or anyone else. I focused on myself and the responsibility for my three children. Because of this decision, I missed out on God's plan of being one with my husband. I made life hard on myself by refusing to ask for his help or counsel regarding anything. I took on the role of a leader at church and at my children's school. If I didn't know how to answer my child's discipline issues at school, I kept silent. I missed opportunities to counsel with biblical advice and grow in my trust of God. At church, I was not transparent with my decision to emotionally separate from my husband. Therefore, no one really knew me. I listened to others' difficulties but rarely shared my walk with God, because I was afraid of being judged. I lost opportunities to cherish my family. Because I put myself first, I greatly slowed my growth of trust in God.

Through re|engage, the Lord gently reminded me through His Spirit just how much He had forgiven me. After leading nine groups, I see my husband as a gift from God and respect his counsel and help in my life. We still disagree at times, but we both have resolved to initiate God's kindness by reopening hard issues, hearing the hurt, and asking for and receiving forgiveness.

John told Gaius that he would handle the issue with Diotrephes in person. In the meantime, John trusted God by encouraging Gaius to initiate hospitality and kindness because God first showed His love to us by sending Jesus to show us the way back to Him our Creator (Romans 5:8).
