Central Truth
At any time, our lives could change in an instant. Why in the world would we not want to prepare ahead of time? Living with an eternal perspective helps guide us until the day Christ returns.
"You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect."
35 Stay dressed for action 1 12:35 Greek Let your loins stay girded; compare Exodus 12:11 and keep your lamps burning, 36 and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and knocks. 37 Blessed are those servants 2 12:37 Or bondservants whom the master finds awake when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will dress himself for service and have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them. 38 If he comes in the second watch, or in the third, and finds them awake, blessed are those servants! 39 But know this, that if the master of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he 3 12:39 Some manuscripts add would have stayed awake and would not have left his house to be broken into. 40 You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”
41 Peter said, “Lord, are you telling this parable for us or for all?” 42 And the Lord said, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom his master will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time? 43 Blessed is that servant 4 12:43 Or bondservant; also verses 45, 46, 47 whom his master will find so doing when he comes. 44 Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions. 45 But if that servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and get drunk, 46 the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in pieces and put him with the unfaithful. 47 And that servant who knew his master's will but did not get ready or act according to his will, will receive a severe beating. 48 But the one who did not know, and did what deserved a beating, will receive a light beating. Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more.
49 I came to cast fire on the earth, and would that it were already kindled! 50 I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how great is my distress until it is accomplished! 51 Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. 52 For from now on in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”
54 He also said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once, ‘A shower is coming.’ And so it happens. 55 And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be scorching heat,’ and it happens. 56 You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?
57 And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? 58 As you go with your accuser before the magistrate, make an effort to settle with him on the way, lest he drag you to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer put you in prison. 59 I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the very last penny.” 5 12:59 Greek lepton, a Jewish bronze or copper coin worth about 1/128 of a denarius (which was a day's wage for a laborer)
Have you ever had a job to do and felt vastly unprepared or had an item on your to-do list you missed? The feeling of being unprepared is a horrible feeling. We typically get anxious, worry about the outcome, or feel like we've missed the mark.
Jesus speaks in these verses about being ready for His return (Luke 12:40). He warns us against being idle and gives us a command to be ready. As believers, readiness is paramount to our walk with Christ. We are to be ready to share the goodness of eternal life that is promised to us. Our hope is in Christ, and we want others to know this hope as well (Titus 2:13).
It is vital as a Christian to be ready for His return. We should be watchful and alert. Being alert means being aware and attentive to the things around us. Jesus told the disciples to be alert (Matthew 24:44). In his book, The Gospel of Luke, Joel B. Green says, "The sort of alertness Jesus counsels is not understood best as a set of activities but rather as a state of mind and heart. Disciples are to be the kind of people who are always on the alert." Also read 1 Thessalonians 5:6.
The evidence for Jesus is clear, yet many choose not to believe it. We are called to be ready, and the rest is up to Him. When we trust Him, He will direct us. Showing others how the Spirit lives in us goes a long way. Saint Francis of Assisi said, "Preach the gospel at all times. When necessary, use words." We need to let go of worry and anxiety and live out our faith. A watching world awaits! He wants us all to be in relationship with Him so we will be ready for His return (2 Peter 3:9).
Are you living each day as if the Lord could come at any moment? Are you stewarding your time, talents, and treasures well? Let us not just honor Him with our lips but our hearts as well (Isaiah 29:13).
1. Do you have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ? If not, what's holding you back?
2. If Christ returned today, would you be ready?
3. Are there others in your life who need to be told of the saving grace of Jesus? Guide them through these Scriptures:
[F]or all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. (Romans 3:23-24, NIV)
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23, NIV)
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8, NIV)
If you declare with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. (Romans 10:9, NIV)
Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. (Romans 5:1, NIV)
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9, NIV)
