Central Truth

The new has come! God and the Lamb are the temple here, dwelling with all those who have believed. In this eternal state, God will dwell with man. Wow! By the way, death, mourning, crying, tears, and pain do not exist here -- this stuff is gone!

Key Verse | Revelation 21:3

And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, "Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them." (Revelation 21:3)

Revelation 21

The New Heaven and the New Earth

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place 1 21:3 Or tabernacle of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, 2 21:3 Some manuscripts peoples and God himself will be with them as their God. 3 21:3 Some manuscripts omit as their God He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment. The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be my son. But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

The New Jerusalem

Then came one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues and spoke to me, saying, “Come, I will show you the Bride, the wife of the Lamb.” 10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, 11 having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. 12 It had a great, high wall, with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and on the gates the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel were inscribed— 13 on the east three gates, on the north three gates, on the south three gates, and on the west three gates. 14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

15 And the one who spoke with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city and its gates and walls. 16 The city lies foursquare, its length the same as its width. And he measured the city with his rod, 12,000 stadia. 4 21:16 About 1,380 miles; a stadion was about 607 feet or 185 meters Its length and width and height are equal. 17 He also measured its wall, 144 cubits 5 21:17 A cubit was about 18 inches or 45 centimeters by human measurement, which is also an angel's measurement. 18 The wall was built of jasper, while the city was pure gold, like clear glass. 19 The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with every kind of jewel. The first was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, 20 the fifth onyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, the twelfth amethyst. 21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls, each of the gates made of a single pearl, and the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.

22 And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. 23 And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. 24 By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, 25 and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there. 26 They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. 27 But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life.

Dive Deeper | Revelation 21

The Join the Journey assignments came as I remembered my dad's life at the anniversary of his death. A wild pilot in the RCAF who then attended architectural school, my dad met the Lord, believed in Him for salvation, and his life changed radically. He took a wonderful wife to partner with him in life and in raising children. His life exhibited the fruit of the Spirit in a consistent way. He was deeply sincere about his children, sisters, their families, and others knowing his Savior who loved him and the world.

Toward his last days, living on a sin-cursed earth was a close reality, evident in my dad's and his family's suffering. In his daily reading, he was in Revelation. His hearing wasn't good -- perhaps due to his flying days. So when he got too weak, he asked me to read, I think because I was easy to understand -- the over-enunciation thing. When we got to this chapter, he asked me to stop. It's a glorious chapter, and I'm sure, sweet to my dad's soul.

John sees a new heaven and new earth. The Holy Spirit helps him articulate what he sees as the holy city, a new Jerusalem, comes down out of heaven as a bride in all her beauty, dressed for her husband -- breathtaking. This is a huge city, seemingly a wondrous cube of color and purity and light with foundations and open gates -- what Jesus told His disciples He was going away to prepare (John 14:2-3). It will be the dwelling place of God and the worthy Lamb, Jesus.

Knowing my dad, I think he would have anticipated these next words and been thrilled once again. God Himself "will dwell among them, and they shall be His people" (Revelation 21:3). In this place, believers will live in an undeserved new intimacy with God! God will dwell with His people whom He has redeemed through the sacrifice of His Son because of love. There will be no sin here, suffering will be over, and fellowship restored. It is the clear promise, hope, and future for all who believe. Thank you, God!

Discussion Questions

1. Jesus is the Lamb of God who died to take away the sin even of the whole world. Have you allowed Him to take away yours? (John 3:16, 17)

2. How badly do you want to share this promise of eternal life in which God dwells with us so that others may hear and believe and have this same future?

3. God the Holy Spirit dwells within each believer (Ephesians 1:13-14 -- great verses to read). Are you practicing the reality of dwelling with God, now on the earth, but also with a look at practicing for the future?

WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY

December 3-7 (Revelation 17-21)

Read Revelation 19:1-10.

Remember: In the Book of Revelation, John is being given visions of what it will be like before, during, and after Jesus returns. In Revelation 19:

• What does John hear?
• What are all of the voices saying?
• Who were they worshiping?
• Why were they worshiping God?
• Who is the Lamb? (John 1:29)
• Who is His bride? (2 Corinthians 11:2)
• Who do you think is invited to the wedding feast? (Revelation 3:20, John 14:6, John 3:16)

Because Jesus came to die for the sins of every person, have you accepted His gift of salvation for yourself? Will you be at the Wedding Feast of the Lamb?

Parents: Walk your kids through the gospel if they have not already accepted Christ as their Savior. (Romans 3:23, 6:23, Romans 5:8, John 3:16, Romans 10:9-13, 1 John 5:11-13)

Activity: All the voices were praising God because of who He is and what He has done. As a family, write a song or poem praising God for who He is and what He has done.
