Central Truth
For those who have "washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb" (verse 14), our good shepherd, Jesus Christ, is waiting for us in heaven, ready to comfort us and meet all our needs, forever.
"He who sits on the throne will spread His tabernacle over them. They will hunger no longer, nor thirst anymore; nor will the sun beat down on them, nor any heat; for the Lamb in the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and will guide them to springs of the water of life; and God will wipe every tear from their eyes." (Revelation 7:15b-17)
1 After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth, that no wind might blow on earth or sea or against any tree. 2 Then I saw another angel ascending from the rising of the sun, with the seal of the living God, and he called with a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm earth and sea, 3 saying, “Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees, until we have sealed the servants of our God on their foreheads.” 4 And I heard the number of the sealed, 144,000, sealed from every tribe of the sons of Israel:
5
12,000 from the tribe of Judah were sealed,
12,000 from the tribe of Reuben,
12,000 from the tribe of Gad,
6
12,000 from the tribe of Asher,
12,000 from the tribe of Naphtali,
12,000 from the tribe of Manasseh,
7
12,000 from the tribe of Simeon,
12,000 from the tribe of Levi,
12,000 from the tribe of Issachar,
8
12,000 from the tribe of Zebulun,
12,000 from the tribe of Joseph,
12,000 from the tribe of Benjamin were sealed.
9 After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10 and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” 11 And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”
13 Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, clothed in white robes, and from where have they come?” 14 I said to him, “Sir, you know.” And he said to me, “These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
15
Therefore they are before the throne of God,
and serve him day and night in his temple;
and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence.
16
They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore;
the sun shall not strike them,
nor any scorching heat.
17
For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd,
and he will guide them to springs of living water,
and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”
I grew up as the youngest of four boys in a neighborhood filled with other kids our age. This was before the advent of video games, the internet, smart phones, or even more than four TV channels for that matter. So, we entertained ourselves by playing outside a lot (pickup basketball, street soccer, Nerf football, Whiffle ball games). You name it, and we probably played it. I distinctly remember one time being asked, at a tender age, what I expected heaven to be like. I answered that in heaven one could play outside all day and not need to come in to go to the bathroom. Wow, what a small view of heaven I had!!
In this chapter, we find a much bigger, much better view of heaven. In it, there are two groups of believers, the 144,000 Jews and the great multitude from every nation, who are comforted by Jesus. These two groups come through the tribulation, a time of great turmoil and suffering on earth that begins the end times period. They have endured great hardships, but now are in the presence of Jesus. All their needs are met, and they are comforted as only He can.
Jesus had promised in the Gospel of John that he would "go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also" (John 14:3). Later, Paul wrote about a believer who "was caught up into Paradise, and heard inexpressible words, which a man is not permitted to speak" (2 Corinthians 12:4). These are mere hints of how great heaven will be, something that is promised to all believers (see Revelation 21:6, 7).
For anyone who has endured hardship in this life, these verses are a great promise and reaffirmation of the hope we have in Jesus. Also, having just survived the long, hot, record breaking summer of 2011, any part of the Bible that promises that "the sun will not beat down on us, nor any heat" sounds pretty good to me!
1. When you die, are you headed to heaven? Do you know what Romans 10:9 says about what it takes to know for sure?
2. How do you imagine heaven today, and how has your perspective changed through the years?
3. How does what the Bible says about heaven influence your walk with Jesus? How has it influenced your priorities in life?
4. Ecclesiastes 3:11 says God has "set eternity in our heart," meaning that all men desire heaven, whether they consciously recognize it or not. How does this fact influence your willingness and ability to share the gospel with the lost?
WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY

• Who is the Lamb?
• How did the Lamb provide salvation to those who believe in Him?
• How do you receive the salvation that the Lamb provides?
• In verses 15-17, there is a list of things that God will do for the believers. What are they?
• Why do those things sound so great?
Activity: The believers were standing before Jesus and praising Him. What are some of your favorite praise songs? What about your favorite Psalms in the Bible? Take time as a family to write an original praise to Jesus. It could be a poem or a song.
