Central Truth

The Lord wants hearts that are fully committed to Him (2 Chronicles 16:9), because He knows that our outward actions will be in vain if our hearts are not sincerely His.

Key Verse | Titus 1:16

They profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny Him, being detestable and disobedient and worthless for any good deed. (Titus 1:16)

Titus 1

Greeting

Paul, a servant 1 1:1 For the contextual rendering of the Greek word doulos, see Preface of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God's elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness, in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began 2 1:2 Greek before times eternal and at the proper time manifested in his word 3 1:3 Or manifested his word through the preaching with which I have been entrusted by the command of God our Savior;

To Titus, my true child in a common faith:

Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.

Qualifications for Elders

This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and appoint elders in every town as I directed you— if anyone is above reproach, the husband of one wife, 4 1:6 Or a man of one woman and his children are believers 5 1:6 Or are faithful and not open to the charge of debauchery or insubordination. For an overseer, 6 1:7 Or bishop; Greek episkopos as God's steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain, but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined. He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound 7 1:9 Or healthy; also verse 13 doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.

10 For there are many who are insubordinate, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision party. 8 1:10 Or especially those of the circumcision 11 They must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for shameful gain what they ought not to teach. 12 One of the Cretans, 9 1:12 Greek One of them a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” 10 1:12 Probably from Epimenides of Crete 13 This testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith, 14 not devoting themselves to Jewish myths and the commands of people who turn away from the truth. 15 To the pure, all things are pure, but to the defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both their minds and their consciences are defiled. 16 They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work.

Dive Deeper | Titus 1

The lowest grade I ever made in geography class was a 98. If you saw that on paper, you might think I knew a thing or two about geography, but that could not be further from the truth. In fact, I am probably the LAST person you should come to with any sort of question pertaining to the location of a city, state, or country outside of Dallas, Texas.

You may not be as geographically challenged as I am, but you can probably think of a time when your knowledge, skill set, or giftedness -- or your attitude, thoughts or motives -- on a particular subject have been made to look better than they really are.

The truth is, you can't get anything past the Creator of the Universe. After all, He knows your thoughts even before you have the chance to think them (Psalm 139:1-4). So it's safe to say that you may be able to fool everyone else into thinking you've got it all together, but you cannot fool God. If you're still not convinced, read Hebrews 4:13.

So why keep trying to get away with it?

Titus 1:16 says, "They profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny him, being detestable and disobedient and worthless for any good deed."

The Lord isn't looking for students who cram for the test every once in awhile so their grades are acceptable to Him. And He's not some teacher wanting everyone to get an A+ on their "works exam" either.

He wants hearts that are fully committed to Him (2 Chronicles 16:9), because He knows that our outward actions will be in vain if our hearts are not sincerely His.

It may have looked like I was an expert in geography based on the grade I brought home on my report card, but we all know there's more to it than just the grade. What really counts is the process of achieving the grade and the process you go through each day as you seek to honor the Lord with your life. Do your words and actions go hand in hand? Is your heart fully committed to Him today? Do your actions reflect that?

Discussion Questions

1. Read Psalm 26:2. Examine the state of your heart today. Are you too focused on the grade and not focused enough on the process of knowing Jesus?

2. Read James 1:22-25 and Matthew 15:7-9. How are these passages similar to the truth found in Titus 1:16? What can we learn from them?

3. My only hope to learn geography is to study it. I am far from being an expert, but I have the books, maps, and resources to get started. In the same way, the only way to truly love God is to know Him. And to know Him, we have to study His Word. Meditate on Psalm 1 as you consider how you might get to know Him on a deeper level today.

WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY

September 17-22 (2 Timothy 4 – Philemon 1)

Read Titus 3:1-8.

• What does it mean to be gentle and show humility to another person?

• How did God show His kindness and love to us?

• Are we saved and accepted into God's family based on good things we do?
•
Have you acknowledged that you are a sinner in need of God's kindness and love?
• Have you accepted the gift of God's grace through Jesus' sacrifice on the cross?
• If so, what does Paul say happened to your sins when you accepted God's gift through Jesus (verse 5)?
• If you haven't, do you want to be a part of God's family? Take time to discuss what that means.
•
When you share your faith with others, do you do it out of gentleness and humility like Paul talked about in verse 2?

Activity: Go outside with some sidewalk chalk. Ask everyone to take time either to draw a picture or write words that represent sins you have 'committed.' (A sin is any thought, word, or deed that breaks God's righteous standards.) Then, get the water hose and wash those pictures and words away . . . showing what happened to your sins when you accepted Jesus' sacrifice by trusting in Him.
