Central Truth
Grace is getting something that we do not deserve. We do not deserve salvation and cannot earn it in any way. We do not deserve to live in eternity with God. By God's design, He gives us freedom to choose His way over our own selfish ways.
Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God. (Galatians 4:7)
1 I mean that the heir, as long as he is a child, is no different from a slave, 1 4:1 For the contextual rendering of the Greek word doulos, see Preface; also verse 7 though he is the owner of everything, 2 but he is under guardians and managers until the date set by his father. 3 In the same way we also, when we were children, were enslaved to the elementary principles 2 4:3 Or elemental spirits; also verse 9 of the world. 4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.
8 Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to those that by nature are not gods. 9 But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world, whose slaves you want to be once more? 10 You observe days and months and seasons and years! 11 I am afraid I may have labored over you in vain.
12 Brothers, 3 4:12 Or Brothers and sisters; also verses 28, 31 I entreat you, become as I am, for I also have become as you are. You did me no wrong. 13 You know it was because of a bodily ailment that I preached the gospel to you at first, 14 and though my condition was a trial to you, you did not scorn or despise me, but received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus. 15 What then has become of your blessedness? For I testify to you that, if possible, you would have gouged out your eyes and given them to me. 16 Have I then become your enemy by telling you the truth? 4 4:16 Or by dealing truthfully with you 17 They make much of you, but for no good purpose. They want to shut you out, that you may make much of them. 18 It is always good to be made much of for a good purpose, and not only when I am present with you, 19 my little children, for whom I am again in the anguish of childbirth until Christ is formed in you! 20 I wish I could be present with you now and change my tone, for I am perplexed about you.
21 Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not listen to the law? 22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave woman and one by a free woman. 23 But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, while the son of the free woman was born through promise. 24 Now this may be interpreted allegorically: these women are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar. 25 Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; 5 4:25 Some manuscripts For Sinai is a mountain in Arabia she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. 26 But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother. 27 For it is written,
“Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear;
break forth and cry aloud, you who are not in labor!
For the children of the desolate one will be more
than those of the one who has a husband.”
28 Now you, 6 4:28 Some manuscripts we brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise. 29 But just as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so also it is now. 30 But what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave woman shall not inherit with the son of the free woman.” 31 So, brothers, we are not children of the slave but of the free woman.
By God's plan, Jesus Christ, His only Son, was born of a virgin woman, so that God could redeem (free, deliver, rescue) each of us from the curse of the Law. If that was not enough, He then adopted us into His family, making us sons who will be His heirs. God knew us before we were created (see Psalm 139), and it was His plan to adopt us into His family when we receive His free gift of salvation. Before we knew God, we were slaves to the things of this world. When God redeemed us, He delivered us from necessarily repeating our sins any longer. We now have both the choice and the freedom to walk closely with Him.
In verse 9 Paul asks, "But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how is it that you turn back again to the weak and worthless elemental things, to which you desire to be enslaved all over again?" What are the "weak and worthless" things that keep me from His daily presence? These could be things such as control, desiring children, pleasing others, or success. While these may not be bad desires, when they consume my every thought and distract me from my relationship with God, I become a slave to them. I seek these idols and not a God who has already delivered me from my many sins.
Why then do I turn back to these idols that I know are not fulfilling eternally? Laziness and selfishness are at the top of my list. I need Jesus every second, every minute, every hour, of every day, to deliver me from these temptations! I need His presence to empower me and His truth to guide me away from my sins. I need others to challenge and encourage me when I am seeking these idols and not God Himself. I am forever grateful to be adopted as His daughter.
GOOD news: We are no longer slaves to the things of this world. (Galatians 4:7)
GREAT news: God adopts us into His family once we call on Him. (Galatians 4:5; Romans 8)
BEST news: God sent His Son as a sacrifice to deliver us from bondage. (Galatians 4:4-5; John 3:16)
1. What are you enslaved to each day?
2. How can you break free of these "weak and worthless" things?
3. Have you received the free gift of God's grace and have a personal relationship with Him?
4. Who will you share the GOOD, GREAT, and BEST news with today?
WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY
Galatians 3 - Ephesians 1 (July 30 - Aug 3)
Read Galatians 5:16-26.
• Look at the list of what your life looks like if you follow the sinful desires (flesh) and then look at the list of a life controlled by the Holy Spirit.
• What are your responses to the two different lists?
•
Which list shows more about God's love to others?
•
What are ways that you can be more diligent to let the Holy Spirit be in control more than your flesh?
• Talk through each of the qualities of being controlled by the Spirit . . . what do the words mean and how do they play out in your life?
Activity: Go to the grocery store together. Each person should pick out nine fruits. When you get home, take each quality of a life controlled by the Holy Spirit and attach it to one of the fruits. Take one fruit with you for lunch each day. Before you eat the fruit, think back about how your morning has gone. Have you allowed the Spirit to be in control? Have you shown that fruit in your life to those around you? If so, praise God that He is working in your life and pray that you will continue to choose His way over your flesh. If not, pray now that you will have a better afternoon . . . of listening to and following the Spirit.
