Central Truth
The God of Joseph, who strengthened and helped him, is our God, too, and will also bless our humble faithfulness.
From the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob
(From there is the Shepherd, the Stone of Israel),
From the God of your father who helps you,
And by the Almighty who blesses you
With blessings of heaven above . . . .
(Genesis 49:24b-25a)

Joseph is a fruitful bough,
a fruitful bough by a spring;
his branches run over the wall.

The archers bitterly attacked him,
shot at him, and harassed him severely,

yet his bow remained unmoved;

Or by the name of the Shepherd

who will bless you
with blessings of heaven above,
blessings of the deep that crouches beneath,
blessings of the breasts and of the womb.
26
The blessings of your father
are mighty beyond the blessings of my parents,
up to the bounties of the everlasting hills.

49:26
A slight emendation yields (compare Septuagint) the blessings of the eternal mountains, the bounties of the everlasting hills
May they be on the head of Joseph,
and on the brow of him who was set apart from his brothers.
27
Benjamin is a ravenous wolf,
in the morning devouring the prey
and at evening dividing the spoil.”
28 All these are the twelve tribes of Israel. This is what their father said to them as he blessed them, blessing each with the blessing suitable to him. 29 Then he commanded them and said to them, “I am to be gathered to my people; bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite, 30 in the cave that is in the field at Machpelah, to the east of Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field from Ephron the Hittite to possess as a burying place. 31 There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife. There they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife, and there I buried Leah— 32 the field and the cave that is in it were bought from the Hittites.” 33 When Jacob finished commanding his sons, he drew up his feet into the bed and breathed his last and was gathered to his people.
I really liked this passage of Scripture, and here's why: Joseph encourages my socks off. I love that he ran away from Potiphar's wife (and I am thankful I married a Joseph in that regard), I love that he wept when he saw his long-lost brothers again, and I love that he forgave them and ended a family legacy of deceit and revenge. Joseph lived a life of commitment and faith despite (or maybe because of?) extreme hardship and persecution. I love that when Jacob blessed his sons, it was Joseph who got a double portion of Jacob's blessings both then and for the future (verse 26).
The flip side is that I find myself disappointed by the failures of men. And I include myself! I fail often to be eternally minded and faithful to how God would have me live. I frequently fall into self pity and lament my "hard" life as I struggle to be a good mom to six kids, three of whom came to us via another country and another set of parents. My flesh doesn't want to respond to the inconveniences, disappointments, and disrespect with forbearance, love, and gentleness. It wants to lash out and vent my frustrations. What I really want is to be like faithful Joseph and please God with my self control and forgiveness.
Contemplating this blessing that Joseph received from God through Jacob, I am reminded of what Joseph's secret to righteous behavior was -- his God! Joseph relied upon the "Mighty One of Jacob," the "Shepherd," the "Stone of Israel" (verse 24), and it was that God who made Joseph's arms agile and kept his bow firm. God strengthened Joseph and helped him. All Joseph had to do was humble himself to God's authority. Jacob's blessing recognized the sovereignty and power of God in Joseph's life. I'm no Joseph, but his God is my God. Joseph's God is awesome, and He loves you and me. He will help and bless us just like He did Joseph, if we will humble ourselves under His mighty hand (1 Peter 5:6).
1. Do commitment and faith define your life? It is never too late to start working on that. And by "work" I mean humbling yourself to God.
2. Are you weary of where God has you? Have you prayed for the faith to continue on your road with peace and joy? Memorize Galatians 6:9.
3. Are you disappointed by yourself or others? God calls us to forgive, like Joseph did, and turn to Him with our disappointments.
