Central Truth

In this passage, we are allowed to see that Jesus was sought out from the very beginning; first by those desiring to worship Him and then by those wishing to destroy Him. We also see God in control as He directs the paths of the magi and Joseph.

Key Verse | Matthew 2:12

And having been warned by God in a dream not to return to Herod, the magi left for their own country by another way. (Matthew 2:12)

Matthew 2

The Visit of the Wise Men

Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men 1 2:1 Greek magi; also verses 7, 16 from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose 2 2:2 Or in the east; also verse 9 and have come to worship him.” When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:

‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
    are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for from you shall come a ruler
who will shepherd my people Israel.’”

Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. 12 And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.

The Flight to Egypt

13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” 14 And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt 15 and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called my son.”

Herod Kills the Children

16 Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men. 17 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah:

18  “A voice was heard in Ramah,
    weeping and loud lamentation,
Rachel weeping for her children;
she refused to be comforted, because they are no more.”

The Return to Nazareth

19 But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, 20 saying, “Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child's life are dead.” 21 And he rose and took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee. 23 And he went and lived in a city called Nazareth, so that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, that he would be called a Nazarene.

Dive Deeper | Matthew 2

One hot Sunday morning last summer, Jonathan Pokluda (Watermark's Young Adults Director) shared a story during his sermon. A young man wanted JP's counsel regarding his current relationship. He couldn't decide if God wanted him to get married or end the relationship. After a few questions, the situation became obvious to JP. If the young man wasn't being obedient to Scripture, why should the Lord reveal more to him? That made perfect sense to me. The Lord was speaking to this young man through His Word. All he had to do was "follow the yellow brick road." But after a lot of self-examination, I realized I often do the same thing. I'll have a problem. I'll search Scripture, pray, and seek godly counsel. But sometimes when God's will isn't in agreement with my own selfish desires, I'll convince myself I haven't heard from the Lord and go my own way.

Then I read this passage, and I was so convicted. In verse 12, God warns the magi, and they heed His warning. And in verses 13, 20, 21, and 22, the Lord reveals His will to Joseph, and Joseph obeys. If it's so simple, why don't I do that? I guess "stupid is as stupid does!" I wish I could say I'm more often obedient than disobedient. I would love to say that my walk with the Lord is so close I always hear Him when He speaks, but that's not true. God speaks to us through His Word, through prayer, and through godly counsel. He is a great communicator! I'm just not a great listener!

After hearing JP's sermon, I have been intentional in my efforts to hear God's voice, but I still make the decision to NOT listen. Meditating on this passage was a powerful reminder that this is an ongoing battle for me; I must choose to listen to God's voice. Each time, it's another opportunity to be obedient. I know I'll continue to have struggles, but as I grow in my faith, I pray I become more like the magi and Joseph. God spoke, and they listened.

Discussion Questions

1. Do you make time with God a priority? (Psalm 46:10)

2. When you have struggles, where do you seek wisdom? (James 1:5)

3. Do you surround yourself with people that will provide godly counsel? (Proverbs 11:14b)

4. Are you able to "hear" God when He's speaking to you? (Isaiah 30:21)

WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY

MATTHEW 1-5 (JANUARY 2-6)

Read Matthew 5:13-16.

What is salt used for? (seasoning, preserving & healing)
What is light used for?
How can you be like salt and light?

Activity: Pour a small amount of oil in a saucepan and heat it up. Then pour in popcorn kernels. Be sure to keep the pan moving so as not to burn the popcorn. Once all kernels have popped, split the popcorn between the paper sacks. Put salt into only bag and shake it up. Then have a taste test of the two bags.

Can you distinctly tell which one has salt on it? How? This is just how God wants us to be. Our lives should clearly reflect that we love and serve Him.

Next, get a flashlight and a dark towel and go into a room without windows (i.e. bathroom or closet). Turn off the light. Talk about the darkness and how it feels. Then turn on the flashlight. Talk about what the flashlight did to the room. Then cover it with the towel and refer back to verse 15. What does God want us to do with the truth of Jesus in our lives?

To shine your light, take some salted popcorn to your neighbors and invite them to church!
