Central Truth
In this passage we see a beautiful picture of how to respond rightly to Jesus. Do we trust Him enough to give Him everything we have? Or do we hold on to our comforts, thinking they will bring life?
Mary then took a pound of very costly perfume of pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. (John 12:3)
1 Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 So they gave a dinner for him there. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table. 3 Mary therefore took a pound 1 12:3 Greek litra; a litra (or Roman pound) was equal to about 11 1/2 ounces or 327 grams of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4 But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said, 5 “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii 2 12:5 A denarius was a day's wage for a laborer and given to the poor?” 6 He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it. 7 Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it 3 12:7 Or Leave her alone; she intended to keep it for the day of my burial. 8 For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.”
9 When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus 4 12:9 Greek he was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 10 So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well, 11 because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.
12 The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. 13 So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” 14 And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,
15
“Fear not, daughter of Zion;
behold, your king is coming,
sitting on a donkey's colt!”
16 His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him. 17 The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. 18 The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign. 19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.”
I am amazed at Mary's sacrifice in anointing Jesus with this costly perfume. She could have sold the perfume and received a year’s wages for it. Instead, she fully believed in and trusted Jesus, and she gave all that she had as a sign of love, gratitude, and adoration. Mary didn’t hold back anything for herself or her siblings. She didn’t try to control the situation and make sure the outcome was favorable for her. She humbly offered all that she had to Him.
Judas objected to this act of service. He was dishonest and a thief and would have kept the money for himself. He was watching out for himself. Numero Uno. He wasn’t concerned with the poor, with Jesus, or even with the disciples he hung out with every day. Judas was concerned with his own comfort, his own glory, his own well being. He quickly showed the condition of his heart to be selfish, greedy, and proud.
I look at Judas and shake my head in disbelief at his actions and thoughts. How could a disciple who hung out with Jesus not get it? How could he be that self-serving? And then I wonder, am I more like Mary or Judas? Do I react selfishly, thinking my time, money, and comfort are more important than showing others I love them? Sadly, my thoughts are usually more focused on myself than others.
I pray my eyes will be opened to opportunities to love and serve people around me. When I do this, I get out of the way and let Jesus have the glory. I am praying my response to Christ and the cross today is more like Mary’s response—filled with gratitude, love, respect, and humility.
Lord, help us to fix our eyes on Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. (Hebrews 12:2)
