Central Truth
Christianity is based not on following rules or understanding theology, but on believing in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior and worshiping Him from the overflow of your heart.
And he said, "Lord, I believe." And he worshiped Him. (John 9:38)
24 So for the second time they called the man who had been blind and said to him, “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.” 25 He answered, “Whether he is a sinner I do not know. One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.” 26 They said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” 27 He answered them, “I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?” 28 And they reviled him, saying, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. 29 We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from.” 30 The man answered, “Why, this is an amazing thing! You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes. 31 We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does his will, God listens to him. 32 Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind. 33 If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.” 34 They answered him, “You were born in utter sin, and would you teach us?” And they cast him out.
35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” 1 9:35 Some manuscripts the Son of God 36 He answered, “And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?” 37 Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and it is he who is speaking to you.” 38 He said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him. 39 Jesus said, “For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.” 40 Some of the Pharisees near him heard these things, and said to him, “Are we also blind?” 41 Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no guilt; 2 9:41 Greek you would not have sin but now that you say, ‘We see,’ your guilt remains.
When I was in third grade, cancer tried to kill me. From day one, I desired a miracle. Thankfully, the Lord healed me from my physical sickness just as He did the blind man. At that point in my life, just like the blind man, I had experienced a miracle—yet only a physical one. Cancer-free and able to see, we both had experienced miracles, but we hadn’t received the True Miracle. Jesus continued to seek me out until I was faced with the same question as the blind man: Do you believe in the Son of Man? Though we were physically healed, Jesus wasn’t done pursuing our hearts and our ultimate healing.
The Lord used cancer and blindness to reveal our true disease—sin. Jesus revealed Himself to the blind man and to me as the true Healer, the one who cures our sin disease. Scripture states, “And he said, ‘Lord, I believe.’ And he worshiped Him.” (John 9:38) The blind man’s true healing had finally occurred! Before this, the blind man thought Jesus was just a prophet because he didn’t know He was the Messiah. The blind man understood that the Messiah was worthy of worship and not just someone to follow.
Before my ultimate healing, I viewed myself as a good kid, probably similar to how the Pharisees viewed themselves. As with the blind man, my true healing occurred when I trusted that Jesus’ death and resurrection paid the penalty for my sins and that my goodness was never going to be good enough. Jesus desires more than just rule-following; He desires our hearts. When Christ is not the focus of our hearts and actions, our Christianity will be reduced to theology and rules. Many of us, just like the Pharisees, live “good, rule-abiding” lives on our own strength and call it Christianity. Beware! This is not Christianity as Jesus taught it.
Let us give Jesus our hearts and be true worshipers; for He has healed us by dying for us!
1. Can you imagine being blind? Take five minutes to close your eyes and try to do some simple tasks. How did being blind make you feel? How did it feel when you opened your eyes and regained your sight?
2. Ask God to reveal areas of blindness in your own life and discuss those areas with your community group.
3. When you are honest with yourself, how often do you live your life on your own strength versus living your life in a way that requires you to trust in Jesus?
4. Is Jesus Christ the center of your life and worship? What draws your heart away and keeps you from worshiping Jesus?
5. Does your belief result in an overflow of worship?
