Central Truth

Life and truth are found in Christ alone.

Key Verse | John 6:68

Simon Peter answered Him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life." (John 6:68)

John 6:60-71

The Words of Eternal Life

60 When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” 61 But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this? 62 Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? 63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64 But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.) 65 And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.”

66 After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. 67 So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” 68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, 69 and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.” 70 Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve? And yet one of you is a devil.” 71 He spoke of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the twelve, was going to betray him.

Dive Deeper | John 6:60-71

I majored in literature in college, and I frequently heard professors announce in no uncertain terms that a paper would take the entire semester to complete. I usually saw this as a sort of challenge. And it did not help that it rarely took more than a week to write a paper, and most took less than three days.

My professors had good intentions, and I probably stressed more around due dates than necessary. Nevertheless, they made absolute statements that weren't absolutely true.

Absolutes are tricky, and making an error is easy. Doctors can say truthfully, “Without air, you will die,” but they cannot always say, “Without functioning lungs you will die.” My nephew lived the first part of his life in an iron lung. This is why we have trouble with absolutes.

Salvation through Christ is absolute truth; there is no other way. This is why Jesus said, "[N]o one can come to Me unless it has been granted him from the Father” (John 6:65). This is why John wrote, “All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men” (John 1:3-4). This is why many left and still leave today (John 6:66).

Men fight for what they believe in, and I like to read Peter’s declaration as a rally for this war in which we win when we die. I did occasionally read my assignments in college, and this is one of my favorites. It’s from “The Battle of Maldon.” This is how I read John 6:68-69.

Byrthwold spoke, grasped his buckler,

He was an old comrade, urged the men,

He full boldly cheered his soldiers,
"Thought must be the harder, heart the keener

Spirit shall be more—as our might lessens.

There lies our chief all cut down,

Good man on the ground; for ever may he grieve

Who now from this war-play thinketh to go.

I am old in years—hence I will not,

But by the side of mine own lord,

By my chief so loved, I think to lie."

Discussion Questions

1. Where do you seek truth aside from Christ?

2. Do you struggle with things the Bible says are absolutes, but society says are subjective?

3. Can your beliefs be supported with Scripture? Do you know those Scriptures?

4. Are you willing to die for the truth of Christ?

FAMILY DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Note: A disciple is anyone who follows Jesus (John 15:14). The twelve disciples were the men Jesus had chosen to walk closely with Him. Jesus was very clear here about who He is and where eternal life comes from.

1. What happened with some of the other disciples who were with Jesus (John 6:66)?

2. When Jesus asked the Twelve if they were going to leave, too, what was Simon Peter’s response?

3. Do you believe that believing and trusting Jesus is the only way to have eternal life?
