Central Truth
God loves you. Like crazy. The reason you have been chosen by God is so that He can show the world a glimpse of His love through you.
Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. (Colossians 3:12)
12 Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
18 Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. 19 Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them. 20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. 21 Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged. 22 Bondservants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, 1 3:22 Or your masters according to the flesh not by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. 23 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. 25 For the wrongdoer will be paid back for the wrong he has done, and there is no partiality.
This is how we are to treat one another out of response to how God has chosen us and loved us with a holy love. Holy means "sacred" or "set apart." We cannot understand what a holy love truly means here on earth. Because of this holy love, however, we are to "put on" these attributes. Others should see these qualities, and they should mark us as believers.
My best man in our wedding used to live with me. It was a true blessing for me. I realized that I was lacking in a particular area of my life: compassion. I was reading through Matthew and realized how Jesus would see a crowd and He would have compassion for them. This was repeated over and over. The Latin root word for compassion is compassio, which means "to suffer with." The first thing Jesus did when He approached people was literally to suffer with them. He took the time to put Himself in their shoes and take on the pain they were experiencing. We are to be bearing each others' burdens and not approach others with judgment or condemnation in our hearts.
So quickly my heart ran to judge my brother. I had forgotten and devalued God's kindness that led me to repentance. My heart had grown prideful, and I didn't know how to be gentle. My patience was gone. This all happened mainly inside in my heart, but it started because I lost sight of who God says I am. We all need the reminder.
We are chosen by God, holy and dearly loved by Him. We were all foolish and disobedient at some point in our lives and continue to make mistakes, but when the kindness of God appeared, He saved us. He saved us solely because of His incredible mercy and by His grace through our God-given faith. Don't lose sight of the incredible price that was paid for your sins and the incomprehensible gift you have been given. Out of this understanding, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience.
Reflect on these qualities and the reason they are so important to God.
1. How and why do you "put on" compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience?
2. How does compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience relate to God's character?
3. How would you define compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience?
