Central Truth

Return to God when you are far from Him, and He will return to you.

Key Verse | Malachi 3:7

"From the days of your fathers you have turned aside from My statutes and have not kept them. Return to Me, and I will return to you," says the LORD of hosts. "But you say, 'How shall we return?''' (Malachi 3:7)

Malachi 3

“Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me. And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts. But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner's fire and like fullers' soap. He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, and they will bring offerings in righteousness to the LORD. 1 3:3 Or and they will belong to the LORD, bringers of an offering in righteousness Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the LORD as in the days of old and as in former years.

Then I will draw near to you for judgment. I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, against the adulterers, against those who swear falsely, against those who oppress the hired worker in his wages, the widow and the fatherless, against those who thrust aside the sojourner, and do not fear me, says the LORD of hosts.

Robbing God

For I the LORD do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed. From the days of your fathers you have turned aside from my statutes and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you, says the LORD of hosts. But you say, ‘How shall we return?’ Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you say, ‘How have we robbed you?’ In your tithes and contributions. You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing me, the whole nation of you. 10 Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need. 11 I will rebuke the devourer 2 3:11 Probably a name for some crop-destroying pest or pests for you, so that it will not destroy the fruits of your soil, and your vine in the field shall not fail to bear, says the LORD of hosts. 12 Then all nations will call you blessed, for you will be a land of delight, says the LORD of hosts.

13 Your words have been hard against me, says the LORD. But you say, ‘How have we spoken against you?’ 14 You have said, ‘It is vain to serve God. What is the profit of our keeping his charge or of walking as in mourning before the LORD of hosts? 15 And now we call the arrogant blessed. Evildoers not only prosper but they put God to the test and they escape.’”

The Book of Remembrance

16 Then those who feared the LORD spoke with one another. The LORD paid attention and heard them, and a book of remembrance was written before him of those who feared the LORD and esteemed his name. 17 “They shall be mine, says the LORD of hosts, in the day when I make up my treasured possession, and I will spare them as a man spares his son who serves him. 18 Then once more you shall see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between one who serves God and one who does not serve him.

Dive Deeper | Malachi 3

So often I turn away from God and get distracted by the world and everything it has to offer. It is so easy to get caught up with all my interests and desires -- the latest trends, relationships, hobbies, and such -- that I lose focus on the thing that matters most in this life, which is Christ Jesus.

After reading this passage, I realize that every day I rob God. Every time I am selfish with my time and resources, putting my own interests above God's, I am robbing the Lord God Almighty (Malachi 3:8).

So how do I return to God? It starts with repentance, acknowledging my sin and brokenness, and offering myself to God to produce fruit for His Kingdom. "Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart" (Jeremiah 29:12-13).

God will deliver us from our sin and bring us back to Him. God wants our whole heart to be fully devoted to Him. To walk with the Lord means to commit ourselves to Him, trusting in and obeying His commands, and surrendering our wills over to Him. God is so faithful, and He richly blesses those who are faithful in pursuing Him.

I often lose sight of the fact that Jesus is coming back to judge the world. I constantly have to remind myself that I am here for God's purposes, not my own, and to keep my eyes fixed on my Savior, Jesus Christ. I don't know when Jesus is coming back (Matthew 24:42), but I need to live as a faithful and wise servant now.

Discussion Questions

1. How do you rob God?

2. What do you need to repent of right now?

3. What are you doing now to live as a faithful servant of God?

4. What do you feel God is calling you to do now to serve His Kingdom?

WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY

ZECHARIAH 14-MALACHI 4 (DECEMBER 12-16)

Read Malachi 3:16-18.

Whose names are written on the scroll? What does it mean to fear God? What does it mean to honor the name of the Lord?

What does verse 17 call those who are written on the scroll?

Read 1 Peter 2:9 (NLT).

How can you be a part of God's people? How does someone care for a treasured possession? How does it make you feel knowing that God cares for His people this way?

ACTIVITY: Let's make scrolls! Fold a piece of paper long ways and cut it along the fold. Gather sticks from the yard and glue one on each end. Then roll the paper from both ends to meet in the middle. Now open the scroll and write on it the names of people you know have trusted Jesus and are a part of His people. Celebrate their relationship with Jesus -- the great joy it is to be in relationship with Him.

Now get another piece of paper and write on it the names of people who you think are not a part of God's people. Keep this as a reminder to pray for them to come to trust Jesus as their Savior. Also, think about a way as a family that you can reach out to them to share about God's love. If they do accept Jesus, add them to your scroll!
