Central Truth

Why wait until you are in a crisis to turn to Him? Seek a relationship with Him now and avoid the destruction that is heading your way!

Key Verse | Zephaniah 2:3

Seek the LORD,
All you humble of the earth
Who have carried out His ordinances;
Seek righteousness, seek humility.
Perhaps you will be hidden
In the day of the LORD'S anger.
(Zephaniah 2:3)

Zephaniah 2

Judgment on Judah's Enemies

Gather together, yes, gather,
    O shameless nation,
before the decree takes effect 1 2:2 Hebrew gives birth
    —before the day passes away like chaff—
before there comes upon you
    the burning anger of the LORD,
before there comes upon you
    the day of the anger of the LORD.
Seek the LORD, all you humble of the land,
    who do his just commands; 2 2:3 Or who carry out his judgment
seek righteousness; seek humility;
    perhaps you may be hidden
    on the day of the anger of the LORD.
For Gaza shall be deserted,
    and Ashkelon shall become a desolation;
Ashdod's people shall be driven out at noon,
    and Ekron shall be uprooted.

Woe to you inhabitants of the seacoast,
    you nation of the Cherethites!
The word of the LORD is against you,
    O Canaan, land of the Philistines;
    and I will destroy you until no inhabitant is left.
And you, O seacoast, shall be pastures,
    with meadows 3 2:6 Or caves for shepherds
    and folds for flocks.
The seacoast shall become the possession
    of the remnant of the house of Judah,
    on which they shall graze,
and in the houses of Ashkelon
    they shall lie down at evening.
For the LORD their God will be mindful of them
    and restore their fortunes.

“I have heard the taunts of Moab
    and the revilings of the Ammonites,
how they have taunted my people
    and made boasts against their territory.
Therefore, as I live,” declares the LORD of hosts,
    the God of Israel,
“Moab shall become like Sodom,
    and the Ammonites like Gomorrah,
a land possessed by nettles and salt pits,
    and a waste forever.
The remnant of my people shall plunder them,
    and the survivors of my nation shall possess them.”
10  This shall be their lot in return for their pride,
    because they taunted and boasted
    against the people of the LORD of hosts.
11  The LORD will be awesome against them;
    for he will famish all the gods of the earth,
and to him shall bow down,
    each in its place,
    all the lands of the nations.

12  You also, O Cushites,
    shall be slain by my sword.

13  And he will stretch out his hand against the north
    and destroy Assyria,
and he will make Nineveh a desolation,
    a dry waste like the desert.
14  Herds shall lie down in her midst,
    all kinds of beasts; 4 2:14 Hebrew beasts of every nation
even the owl and the hedgehog 5 2:14 The identity of the animals rendered owl and hedgehog is uncertain
    shall lodge in her capitals;
a voice shall hoot in the window;
    devastation will be on the threshold;
    for her cedar work will be laid bare.
15  This is the exultant city
    that lived securely,
that said in her heart,
    “I am, and there is no one else.”
What a desolation she has become,
    a lair for wild beasts!
Everyone who passes by her
    hisses and shakes his fist.

Dive Deeper | Zephaniah 2

One of the greatest adventures of my life came just after I graduated from high school. I took a ten-week motorcycle trip by myself. It was amazing! As I headed back home to San Jose from Denver, I was met with a 50-mph headwind in Utah. I knew my bike could go 100 mph flat out (don't tell my mom that I knew that), but I could only go 50 mph against this wind. I came to a sign that said "Warning. . . next gas 150 miles!!!" In my infinite wisdom, I chose not to stop for gas, figuring the wind would let up, and I would make it. At some point about 75 miles further, I knew I was doomed, and eventually I did run out of gas. Not my most brilliant move ever! I should have turned around and gone 150 mph the other way!

Zephaniah is a warning sign to Judah and, as seen in this chapter, even its enemies. God calls everyone to repentance so He can protect us (verse 3). "Protect" actually means "to hide by covering." Picture a mother hen covering her chicks with her wings to protect them.

I know that God loves me because He puts up warning signs for me! He could just stand around amused at all the self-destruction and crises that I might bring upon myself. But instead, the Bible tells me that because I know His son, Jesus, and have received His provision of forgiveness by faith, God is for me! He has good things planned for me! (Jeremiah 29:11). To keep me from running out of gas, going the wrong way, declining in crisis, and ending in death, He uses "Zephaniahs" in my life to warn me. These Zephaniahs are God's Word (2 Timothy 3:16-17), His Spirit (1 John 2:27), and my community of believers who know me well (Hebrews 10:24). His goal for me is to thrive; to live life to its fullest capacity (John 10:10).

So be smart, turn around before you run out of gas!

Discussion Questions

1. When is the last time you heeded a warning sign (Word, Spirit, community) and saved yourself some grief?

2. Why do you think we don't heed the warnings of God before we are in a crisis?

3. When a crisis does occur in your life, how can you gain access to God's covering/protection? (Zephaniah 2:3)

WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY

HABAKKUK 2-ZEPHANIAH 3 (NOVEMBER 14-18)

Read Habakkuk 3:17-19.

What hard circumstances is Habakkuk describing in verse 17? Raising crops and livestock was how the people worked and made their living. Why would not having all of those things be so hard? What did Habakkuk say he would do in verse 18 even though things were hard? Is it hard to trust the Lord when things are not going well?

Read Proverbs 3:5-6, Psalm 46:1-3, Isaiah 41:10, Psalm 145:13, & Hebrews 10:23.

Why can we trust God? What are hard things that could happen in your life that would be like having empty fields and no cattle? How can you remember to trust God even in those circumstances?

ACTIVITY: In verse 19, Habakkuk refers to having feet like a deer, what did they help him do? Who gave him the ability to navigate the hard circumstances? Now think about other animals and what they have that helps them in hard situations -- i.e., the bird's wings to escape danger, or the cheetah's quickness to catch what it needs for food. What would you like to have to help you in a hard circumstance you are facing? (Example: When friends say hurtful things about you, having feet to walk away from the circumstance or the right words to be bold to stand up.) Remember that every good and perfect gift comes from the Lord (James 1:17), so pray He will give you what you need to withstand hard things.
