Central Truth
It is impossible to follow God consistently without His transforming love in our hearts.
He has told you, O man, what is good;
And what does the Lord require of you
But to do justice, to love kindness,
And to walk humbly with your God?
(Micah 6:8)
1
Hear what the LORD says:
Arise, plead your case before the mountains,
and let the hills hear your voice.
2
Hear, you mountains, the indictment of the LORD,
and you enduring foundations of the earth,
for the LORD has an indictment against his people,
and he will contend with Israel.
3
“O my people, what have I done to you?
How have I wearied you? Answer me!
4
For I brought you up from the land of Egypt
and redeemed you from the house of slavery,
and I sent before you Moses,
Aaron, and Miriam.
5
O my people, remember what Balak king of Moab devised,
and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him,
and what happened from Shittim to Gilgal,
that you may know the righteous acts of the LORD.”
6
“With what shall I come before the LORD,
and bow myself before God on high?
Shall I come before him with burnt offerings,
with calves a year old?

and it is sound wisdom to fear your name:

In Micah 6 God is putting the people of Israel on trial because they have all too quickly forgotten all the wonderful things He has done for them. The people of Israel took God's provisions for granted, and they became self-centered. Once Israel realized they had forgotten all the wonderful things God had done for them, they tried to appease God by offering sacrifices, even their firstborn children.
Ultimately, God wanted changed hearts for the people of Israel, and He still wants that for us today! He wants us to be fair, just, merciful, and humble in all that we do. God wants us to be living sacrifices for Him daily.
Romans 12:1-2 says, "Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect."
As a person who struggles with perfectionism and performance, I have many times tried to please God by serving and loving others. While both serving and loving others are good things, my motivation wasn't always genuine. Sometimes, I did it because it was expected of me, still other times because it's what "perfect" Christians do.
It wasn't until the Lord changed my heart and taught me how, "to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with [my] God" (Micah 6:8), that I truly understood what the Lord required of me. Without the Lord changing my heart, I would be no better off than the Israelites of Micah's generation.
1. Have you allowed God's love to radically change your heart?
2. In what ways have you struggled to try to please God?
3. Are you walking humbly with God? Or would people describe you as a prideful person?
4. What is one way today that you can "present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice," just like it says in Romans 12:1-2?
WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY
MICAH 2-6 (OCTOBER 31-NOVEMBER 4)
Read Micah 6:8.
What has God told us is good?
What does it mean to act justly/do what is right?
What does it mean to love mercy/kindness?
What does it mean to walk humbly with God?
Read Romans 3:21-28.
How did God act justly toward sin? How did He show mercy to us?
Read Philippians 2:5-11.
How did Jesus walk humbly with God? In light of what God has done for us, how can we act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God? (Refer to Luke 10:27.)
ACTIVITY: Have each member of your family think about a way this week to live out the greatest commandment. How will you love God first this week? And then think about the 2nd commandment -- what can you do to love your neighbor as yourself this week?
