Central Truth
Stop and take an honest look at your current situation. Where are you allowing depravity, sin, and death to continue in your life? What are the warning signs you are ignoring?
Proclaim on the citadels in Ashdod and on the citadels in the land of Egypt and say, "Assemble yourselves on the mountains of Samaria and see the great tumults within her and the oppressions in her midst." (Amos 3:9)
1 Hear this word that the LORD has spoken against you, O people of Israel, against the whole family that I brought up out of the land of Egypt:
2
“You only have I known
of all the families of the earth;
therefore I will punish you
for all your iniquities.
3
Do two walk together,
unless they have agreed to meet?
4
Does a lion roar in the forest,
when he has no prey?
Does a young lion cry out from his den,
if he has taken nothing?
5
Does a bird fall in a snare on the earth,
when there is no trap for it?
Does a snare spring up from the ground,
when it has taken nothing?
6
Is a trumpet blown in a city,
and the people are not afraid?
Does disaster come to a city,
unless the LORD has done it?
7
For the Lord God does nothing
without revealing his secret
to his servants the prophets.
8
The lion has roared;
who will not fear?
The Lord God has spoken;
who can but prophesy?”
9
Proclaim to the strongholds in Ashdod
and to the strongholds in the land of Egypt,
and say, “Assemble yourselves on the mountains of Samaria,
and see the great tumults within her,
and the oppressed in her midst.”
10
“They do not know how to do right,” declares the LORD,
“those who store up violence and robbery in their strongholds.”
11 Therefore thus says the Lord God:
“An adversary shall surround the land
and bring down
1
3:11
Hebrew An adversary, one who surrounds the landhe shall bring down
your defenses from you,
and your strongholds shall be plundered.”
12 Thus says the LORD: “As the shepherd rescues from the mouth of the lion two legs, or a piece of an ear, so shall the people of Israel who dwell in Samaria be rescued, with the corner of a couch and part 2 3:12 The meaning of the Hebrew word is uncertain of a bed.
13
Hear, and testify against the house of Jacob,”
declares the Lord God, the God of hosts,
14
“that on the day I punish Israel for his transgressions,
I will punish the altars of Bethel,
and the horns of the altar shall be cut off
and fall to the ground.
15
I will strike the winter house along with the summer house,
and the houses of ivory shall perish,
and the great houses
3
3:15
Or and many houses
shall come to an end,”
declares the LORD.
One day, I got in my car and noticed the "check brakes" light was on. I made a mental note to get it checked out. It was a pretty busy season, and several days passed. "I really need to get that taken care of," I thought. Several months later, I stopped noticing the light. The brakes began to squeal, and as embarrassing as it was, I still would not take the time to take care of the situation. Then one day while driving on 635, MY BRAKES GAVE OUT! Luckily, I was okay, but it literally took my brakes failing for me to understand the gravity of the situation.
In this passage, we read about Amos pleading with the people of Israel to heed caution and take warning, to stop and repent to God. In verse 9, Amos tells them to assemble on the mountaintops and get a real perspective on the state of their condition. Blinded by greed and prosperity, the people of Israel were ignorant of their true depravity and misery.
Avoidance is my broken way of "dealing" with things I prefer to ignore. I learned in ReGeneration, a Watermark spiritual recovery ministry, that climbing to my "mountaintops of Samaria" and taking an honest look at my situation can be challenging, put me in uncomfortable situations, and cause me to take ownership of my faults. But ultimately, I don't have to be afraid. Fear is the root cause of my avoidance -- fear of failure, fear of rejection, fear of pain, or fear of the uncertain. Sometimes, it is fear of the action I will be called to take and what discomfort or inconvenience that action might cause.
No matter how real my fear may feel, it is not consistent with Scripture. 1 John 4:18 says, "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear . . . ." If you were to trust fully in this truth today, what warning sign(s) would you heed? What step of obedience would you finally put into action? What thing would you stop avoiding?
1. Ultimately, we pay the price from our avoidance and failure to heed warning signs. In the past, what hurt, pain, or destruction has your avoidance caused?
2. Take an honest inventory of your current life. What are you avoiding?
3. What would you do today if you had no fear?
WEEKLY FAMILY ACTIVITY
AMOS 1-5 (OCTOBER 10-14)
Read Amos 1.
Why do you think Amos uses the word roars when he talks about how God will speak (verse 2)? What message was Amos trying to send to the people of Israel?
Next, Amos says that God "thunders" from Jerusalem (verse 2, NIV).
Why do you think Amos chooses to use the word thunder? When you hear thunder, how do you feel?
Amos is trying to warn the people of Israel in this short book. He wants them to know that God is serious about sin and that their sin will not go unpunished.
How do you think God feels about sin today? What do you think God wants you to do with the sin (the things that are displeasing to God) in your life?
ACTIVITY: Amos depicts God as a roaring lion and a clap of thunder. When you think of God, what do you see? Using paper and markers, draw a picture of how you see God. On one side of the paper, draw God (or what you feel represents God) when He is pleased. On the other side of the paper, draw a picture of how you see God (or what you feel represents God) when He is angry about sin and injustice.
Discuss, as a family, how the book of Amos represents God's frustration with Israel's sin and His hope that Israel will repent and return to Him. Talk about things in your life that are pleasing to God . . . and things from which you need to repent.
